morrison is repeatedly referred to as the natural heir
to william burroughs. we're often told that he also
wrote 'the matrix' three years before it happened. both
and neither of these things are true.
to date, THE INVISIBLES is morrison's masterwork. part
comic-book, part rocknroll / punk / rave extravganza,
part gideon bible for the 21st century, part morrison's
lunatic indulgences and, occassionally, part bloody
indecipherable mess.
you don't necesarily 'read' THE INVISIBLES so much as
let the work infect you. it feels as if you're being
virally indoctrinated into an ongoing mission to stimulate
the world into a revolution of the mind - and the book
you hold in front of you is your manual.
on the surface, it is ostensibly the story of an 'invisible'
terrorist cell fighting against the evil that exists
at the heart of power. it hits out at the corruption
of government, media and popular culture and it continually
champions the right to assert free will. it does all
this through a veneer of mysticism, spirituality and
demonology. throw in the marquis de sade, john lennon
and jason king and you're still nowhere close.
it is, of course, all of that and far more. i can't
pretend to have understood more than about 50% of the
series (and that's probably an over-estimate), however
i'll never forget the moment when i finished 'kissing
mister quimper' and i said to myself "i know what
i must do now...". THE INVISIBLES set me back on
track - reminded me that i have a responsibility, not
to simply sit back, be angry and argue the toss, but
rather to do something constructive. i have to be a
player in the game of life, not just a disgruntled commentator.
how that manifests itself is the most difficult question
of all, but it's perhaps the most important. if THE
INVISIBLES is the moment when the curtain is peeled
back on the great and mighty Oz, then it's our duty
to send out the invitations.
alas, THE INVISIBLES is no more (save perhaps a movie
at some point which has been languishing in development
hell for years). fortunately, morrison is extremely
prolific and has recently been revising the mythology
of the X-MEN as well as starting his own publishing
company CRACK COMICKS with a new series entitled THE
FILTH.
with numerous movie treatments, albums, short stories
and other graphic novels to his name, morrison's occultural
ideas are being hurtled into the mainstream like a hail
of grenades. soft-headed people the world over will
be finding their brains on their pillows come the dawn.
