\nback when i was living in london a few years ago, i went to an exhibition of fluxus art at the tate. the exhib itself was somewhat underwhelming, but i was knocked out of my scepticism by the volume of work credited to yoko ono<\/strong>. for someone whose name represents so much to so many people, it was disturbing to consider how much of yoko’s own individuality had been almost completely consumed by the shadow of lennon over the decades. a cursory scroll of her wikipedia entry<\/a> details a long life of art, music and activism that goes far beyond the realms of beatlemania. one can only hope that history will be honest and kind to yoko – and that she is remembered for being more than just mrs lennon.
\n‘yes, i’m a witch’, ono’s 23rd album, is released on february 19th and is a collection of remixes and re-recordings from yoko’s back catalogue. apparently, all the musicians involved (including antony, le tigre, cat power, jason pierce, flaming lips, sleepy jackson<\/strong> and more) were asked to choose their own tracks. above, peaches<\/strong> rightly opts for ‘kiss kiss kiss’, originally from lennon & ono’s ‘double fantasty’ album (1980) wherein yoko yelped in the pursuit of an orgasm. here ms. peaches all but ditches every element of the original, with the exception of yoko’s vocals – the results are stark and compelling, and a perfect example of how these revisionist projects can often find themselves unexpectedly hitting the bullseye.
