\nthere’s three good reasons to get excited about brazil’s bonde do role<\/a> – aka “the rollercoaster band”. (1) they’re the first artists signed to diplo<\/strong>‘s new label mad decent<\/a>, (2) it’s baile funk, aka funk carioca, the single most exciting musical development in the last 18 months and (3) it sounds like nothing else you’ve ever heard, or ever likely to hear.
\nfor their first release, the ‘melo do tabaco’ e.p., they ostensibly follow the baile funk blueprint; miami bass, 80s electro, ruff MCing and – the key baile component – a liberal sampling of cheesey 80s pop. however, it’s in their choice of the latter that they excel. gone are the obvious sources; in their place comes alice in chains<\/strong>, ac\/dc<\/strong> and a stunning use of the riff from ‘summer nights’ from ‘grease’. bonde do role<\/strong> are certainly here to mess with our innate musical bigotry – that ‘grease’ riff is ingrained like an ingrowing toe-nail into the lowest eschelons of our shared pop culture experience, and yet somehow the band make it sound funny, fresh and hugely enjoyable all over again.
\nproducer pedro d’eyrot says: “the joke is to be as stupid and cheesy as you can be, and people will buy it.” absolutely – because in today’s pitchfork culture of intellectual tub-thumping, we need to let loose with dumbass shit now and again. and just how dumb can it get? here’s a sample lyric (translated from the original portuguese courtesy of rolling stone): “i was at a party \/ and i saw a whore \/ i put my tongue into her asshole \/ and my tongue came out all dirty”. nice.
