{"id":95,"date":"2006-01-30T17:28:25","date_gmt":"2006-01-30T06:28:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fatplanet.com.au\/blog\/2006\/01\/30\/knaan-somalia\/"},"modified":"2021-01-31T05:13:32","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T05:13:32","slug":"knaan-somalia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stuartbuchanan.com\/archives\/2006\/01\/30\/knaan-somalia\/","title":{"rendered":"K&#039;NAAN [SOMALIA]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"201\" border=\"1\" alt=\"knaan\" id=\"image96\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fatplanet.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/01\/knaan.gif\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>mp3:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedustyfoot.com\/mp3\/soobax_full.mp3\">k&#8217;naan &#8216;soobax&#8217;<\/a><br \/>\nhip hop poet <strong>k&#8217;naan<\/strong> has just landed in australia, promoting his album &#8216;the dusty foot philosopher&#8217;.  the title refers in part to <strong>k&#8217;naan<\/strong>&#8216;s upbringing in somalia, for the &#8216;philosophy&#8217; look no further than the many tracts found on his <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedustyfoot.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">web site<\/a>.<br \/>\nreared on <strong>nas<\/strong> and <strong>rakim<\/strong>, &#8216;the dusty foot philosopher&#8217; feels at times very much like a typical commercial american hip hop album, however shot throughout the set, <strong>k&#8217;naan <\/strong>additonally reveals a genuine sense of his origins, dropping african sounds, instrumentation and verses &#8211; a fusion that sheds new light on hip hop&#8217;s natural roots.<br \/>\nnow settled in canada, <strong>k&#8217;naan<\/strong> came under fire last year from his adopted country&#8217;s prince of hip hop, <strong>k-os<\/strong>, who allegedly questioned <strong>k&#8217;naan<\/strong>&#8216;s credentials in his song &#8216;b-boy stance&#8217;.  the fact that <strong>k&#8217;naan<\/strong> came from the &#8216;river of blood&#8217; (regarded as one of the most dangerous hoods in africa); that when fleeing gunmen at the age of eleven, his two best friends were shot dead; that his brother blew up a court building and was due to be executed by firing squad (prior to them all managing to escape on the last commercial flight to leave mogadishu) &#8211; those tales would seem to give <strong>k&#8217;naan<\/strong> the benefit of the doubt when it comes to authenticity.  a fact that he reminds us of in the track &#8216;what&#8217;s hardcore?&#8217; &#8211; &#8220;if i rhymed about home and got descriptive, i\u00c7\u0192\u00d9d make 50 cent look like limp bizkit&#8221;.<br \/>\nas a side note &#8211; on his site, <strong>k&#8217;naan<\/strong> goes out of his way to marry the scientific beliefs of philosophy with his religious ideals, clearly stating that the two are not incompatible.  he says: &#8220;philosophers offer ideas while revelations offer god&#8217;s direct guidance.  so in that sense, there are no contradictions between religion and philosophy&#8221;.  glad that&#8217;s cleared up.
