{"id":8403,"date":"2006-06-22T22:07:47","date_gmt":"2006-06-22T12:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stuartbuchanan.com\/music\/?p=8403"},"modified":"2021-01-31T05:13:53","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T05:13:53","slug":"betelguese-spain-fat-planet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stuartbuchanan.com\/archives\/2006\/06\/22\/betelguese-spain-fat-planet\/","title":{"rendered":"Fat Planet &#8211; Betelguese (Spain)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Originally posted on Fat Planet.<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<strong>DOWNLOAD:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dl.dropbox.com\/u\/11282597\/discontent-media\/mp3\/Betelgeuse_Error-Original-Version.mp3\">BETELGEUSE error<\/a><br \/>\none of the main routes for researching and sourcing music for fat planet is drawing on tracks found on regional label compilations. it\u2019s by no means a bad thing, those compilations do a fantastic job of pulling together artists from specific geographic regions and distributing their music worldwide. however, at the retail end of the food chain, most retailers seem to naturally choose to stock compilations that have more sales potential \u2013 those that feature tracks or remixes from known artists, or feature a genre that typically defines that country or region. for example, most african compilations found in record stores will be either traditional indigenous music or western remixes of old-school afrobeat tracks. try to source contemporary african productions from the \u2018world music\u2019 section of your local store and you\u2019re in trouble \u2013 even though there are apparently over 2,000 hip hop groups in senegal alone.<br \/>\nthis rather long winded tract is designed to show that most contemporary spanish compilations found on australian shelves will be hawking modern derivations of tango, or 21st century flamenco. and whilst some of that deserves a thorough listen, it just further proves the point that it\u2019s nigh on impossible to pick up any spanish alt.rock, electronica or hiphop outside of the region.<br \/>\nwhich brings us to david ortola and jose antonio serrano aka\u00a0<strong>betelgeuse<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 delivering some long overdue spanish electronica to \u2018fat planet\u2019. ortola is known for his work as\u00a0<strong>lontano<\/strong>, whilst serrano records solo material under the name of\u00a0<strong>noisome<\/strong>; together with dj\u00a0<strong>chelis<\/strong>, they\u2019ve established the \u2018kontakte\u2019 label and the debut betelgeuse e.p. \u2018kontakt\u2019 is first out of the traps. the label aesthetic is described as \u201cabstract electronic music to glitchcore through experimental pop, soundscape, classical music poetry, jazz and IDM\u201d \u2013 an inspired menu.<br \/>\nfor me, the recording signifies a rich step forward in the humanisation of experimental electronica. for too long the genre has driven us to cold abstract climes, and it\u2019s taken the clumsily titled \u2018folktronica\u2019 to bring us back down to nature. betelgeuse opt for a different tactic, drawing instead on ortola\u2019s classical background \u2013 marrying traditional acoustic, piano and string instrumentation with innovative electronic constructions, and the results are wonderfully unique. this is most evident on the oddly titled \u2018r3lach3 du quarks\u2019, full of soft micro-editing and warm glitches. on \u2018error\u2019, betelgeuse are in no mood to rush the job, instead developing a wide configuration of dark acoustic and electronic sounds, presenting new ideas almost as quickly as they are stolen away. and if that wasn\u2019t enough to whet your appetite, dropping in for a visit on the flip side is spanish resident\u00a0<strong>dj rupture<\/strong>, with his \u2018rust belt blues remix\u2019 of the lead track. \u2018kontakt\u2019 succeeds as a strong signal of both label and artist intent, and leaves us with high expectations for the next release from serrano\u2019s\u00a0<strong>noisome<\/strong>\u00a0project \u2013 preview his work at<a href=\"http:\/\/profile.myspace.com\/noisom3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">myspace.com\/noiseom3<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kontakterecords.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kontakterecords.com<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/betelgeuse.kontakterecords.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">betelgeuse.kontakterecords.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Originally posted on Fat Planet.
