{"id":6567,"date":"2010-03-31T11:52:58","date_gmt":"2010-03-31T11:52:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stuartbuchanan.com\/audio-archive-rare-1996-klf-radio-interview-why-they-burnt-one-million-pounds\/"},"modified":"2021-01-31T08:34:26","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T08:34:26","slug":"audio-archive-rare-1996-klf-radio-interview-why-they-burnt-one-million-pounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stuartbuchanan.com\/archives\/2010\/03\/31\/audio-archive-rare-1996-klf-radio-interview-why-they-burnt-one-million-pounds\/","title":{"rendered":"The KLF \/ K Foundation Radio Interview \u2013 Why They Burnt One Million Pounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in the mid 90s, I edited a zine in Glasgow called <a title=\"(Re)Introducing Thee Data Base\" href=\"http:\/\/stuartbuchanan.com\/music\/2011\/07\/31\/reintroducing-thee-data-base-1993-1996\/\">Thee Data Base<\/a>.\u00a0 In 1996, my co-editor Alan and I managed to procure what was, at the time, a tabloid-bating exclusive: we published an exclusive interview with former-<strong>KLF<\/strong> creators, <strong>Bill Drummond<\/strong> and <strong>Jimmy Cauty<\/strong> \u2013 only a short while after they had flown by themselves to the Scottish island of Jura and, in an abandoned cottage, systematically burnt one million pounds, note by note. The interview was carried out by John Dower, transcribed from a live radio interview he conducted on Glasgow\u2019s Sub City Radio. <!--more-->\u00a014 years later, John is now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0235770\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a somewhat renowned director<\/a> with a string of excellent documentaries to his name.<br \/>\nBill &amp; Jimmy filmed the entire action of burning the money, and then proceeded to screen the footage, \u201cWatch The K Foundation Burn A Million Quid\u201d, at various locations across the UK. It remains today as one of the most confounding and confronting artistic statements ever made. The rationale? There were many given, but none were satisfactory \u2013 even to the artists themselves.<br \/>\nYou can <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/K_Foundation_Burn_a_Million_Quid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">read the full story on Wikipedia<\/a>, or hunt down their 1997 book, &#8220;K Foundation Burn A Million Quid&#8221;.<br \/>\nLast\u00a0 month, Glasgow&#8217;s Sub City Radio contacted me to see if I had a copy of John&#8217;s original radio interview.\u00a0 Somewhere in a box in my garage, buried under some old industrial music mixtapes, I found a Scotch C90 with (almost) the entire hour-long interview intact.\u00a0 And in the spirit of free broadcasting, I&#8217;ve posted the audio below.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s some key moments here: journalist Jack McLean attempting to hold Drummond &amp; Cauty to task for effectively mocking the poor, the embarrassing episode where the duo turn down a BBC executive\u2019s offer a free hour of their own content on Radio One, the chastising of a local artist who is \u2018just not trying hard enough\u2019 and the admission that, sadly, even though a million pounds went up in smoke, \u201cGod didn\u2019t show up\u201d.<br \/>\nYou can also read an introduction by John Dower and a full transcript at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libraryofmu.org\/display-resource.php?id=416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Library of Mu<\/a>.<br \/>\nDrummond gave an interview in 2004 where he finally went on record to say that he regretted the decision: <em>\u201cOf course I regret it. My children especially regret it, but I don\u2019t regret it all the time. A long time ago, we realised that everybody wanted us to have the smart answer, and we felt we owed it to people, especially our families, to have this. After a while, we realised that whatever answer we came up with would not be good enough. It was more for other people to take from it whatever they wanted, whether it be \u2018they obviously didn\u2019t do it\u2019 or \u2018it\u2019s a terrible thing\u2019 or whatever. It\u2019s for other people to explore.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\nAlan and I later turned the entire global art world on its head by staging our own public ritual, entitled \u2018Watch Thee Data Collectiv Burn One Pound\u2019.
