\nthanks to music@pl.pt<\/a>, last year i managed to pick up a couple of tracks from polish artist pati yang<\/strong>‘s 2005 album, ‘silent treatment’. from the extracts that i’ve heard, it would appear to be a release that mirrors ‘felt mountain’-era goldfrapp<\/strong> and the more epic reaches of artists such as lamb<\/strong> and portishead<\/strong>. contributions from heavyweights such as film composer david arnold<\/strong>, keith tenniswood<\/strong> (two lone swordsmen<\/strong>) and stephen hilton<\/strong> (co-founder of the free association<\/strong> with david holmes<\/strong>) ensure that it never falls into a trip-hop retread, quite the opposite. check the video for ‘all that is thirst’ on youtube<\/a>
\nhilton – whose impressive resume is dotted with names such as isaac hayes, depeche mode, massive attack<\/strong> and moloko<\/strong>, and audio production on movies such as “moulin rouge” – also produced the ‘silent treatment’ album and now returns with yang for a new project entitled flykkiller<\/strong>. according to last.fm, this is their second project together (after children<\/strong>). yang also involved herself in the 2004 free association album, ‘music from the film code 46<\/a>‘ in addition to producing music for the polish film ‘egoisci’ and supporting depeche mode <\/strong>on their recent warsaw date.
\nthanks to the band, we’re offered an upfront preview of the flykkiller<\/strong> album, the mp3 “controlled environment”. a full, delicious minute of looped sampling drops into a heavy, twitching break, replete with processed yang vocals and layers of odd, undefinable audio samples. a world away from the lush textures of yang’s last release, it’s a fascinating four minute adventure. check the flykkiller myspace<\/a> for another preview, the self-titled lead track from the full length album, due this summer (an ep is apparently slated for march, complete with a david holmes <\/strong>remix). their myspace gives us some indication of what to expect, albeit in an abstract and tangental way – an odd press photograph which includes a character head-to-toe in black rubber, married with a literally barking mad back story involving “violent lights” and giant flies made of steel. makes me feel all funny inside.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
