went on a bootleg hunt on sunday night. been a while since i’d had some new ‘bastard pop’ and i was keen to see how the scene had moved on in the last few months. so here’s what i found, mostly all of which is from the uk :::
\nJOOLS the j-lo end theory<\/strong>\u00a0[site<\/a>]
\nit’s no secret, i hate\u00a0j-lo<\/strong>\u00a0with a passion, but this is probably the only piece of music i’ve heard where i can actually bear to listen to her. porbably because this is a mix of\u00a0j-lo<\/strong>,\u00a0dj shadow<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0chris isaak<\/strong>\u00a0– done to great effect. jools, i salute you – actually making j-lo palatable!
\nZIMEN pump up the rapture<\/strong>\u00a0[site<\/a>]
\napparently this is only\u00a0zimen<\/strong>‘s 2nd bootleg, which makes the results even more amazing – a tight beat-for-beat splicing of ‘house of jealous lovers’ with\u00a0MARRS<\/strong>‘ ‘pump up the volume’. probably my favourite boot for a while and destined to find its way into one of my dj sets before long.
\nLIONEL l.s.f. (lionel’s galang re-edit)<\/strong>\u00a0[site<\/a>]
\nthis is a mix which (i believe) mainly features an artist called\u00a0kasabian<\/strong>\u00a0– never heard of them, living down under it’s maybe not suprising.\u00a0lionel<\/strong>\u00a0however drops in\u00a0MIA<\/strong>‘s ‘galang’ plus some of\u00a0franz ferdinand<\/strong>‘s ‘take me out’ and comes out the other end with a downtempo killer that is truly top notch. for the ipod, not the dancefloor.
\nMCSLEAZY she wants to move (mcsleazy remix)<\/strong>\u00a0[site<\/a>]
\ngreat little electronic workout of the\u00a0NERD<\/strong>\u00a0modern-day classic. there are so many boots and even official remixes of this track (see also anything by kelis…) that it’s hard to differentiate between the good and the bad.\u00a0mcsleazy<\/strong>\u00a0however drops a mix that’s worthy of featuring on an official release and even trumps some of those put out by the band themselves (witness the\u00a0DFA<\/strong>\u00a0mix, not the duo’s best mix…)
\nPOJ greatest trickster<\/strong>\u00a0[site<\/a>]
\npoj<\/strong>\u00a0has been on my ‘must visit’ list for a while, i’ve loved his fucked up glitch versions of top ten commercial tunes (see his great mix of ‘crazy in love’ by way of example). this track marries\u00a0kelis<\/strong>(surprise, surprise…) with\u00a0sister sledge<\/strong>. yes, so kelis is overused in bootlegs, but by turning ‘trick me’ into a disco track, poj has carried it off with class and panache! who’d have thought it \ud83d\ude42
\nXEROX tipsy kids\u00a0<\/strong>[site<\/a>]
\nfinally, something a little less serious (if possible) –\u00a0xerox<\/strong>\u00a0take\u00a0j-kwon<\/strong>‘s ‘tipsy’ and do the obvious thing, so obvious in fact that no-one else thought to do it – which is why this a little piece of genius. yup, add\u00a0queen<\/strong>‘s ‘we will rock you’ to j-kwon’s handclaps and throw in ‘kids will rock you’ too … kindergarten kids singing queen, backed by j-kwon … welcome to the new century of music \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
