The covers of his first four albums all seem to riff off 70s and 80s horror tropes &#8211; all disconnected, indistinct faces in one form or another. I\u2019ve only recently started listening to these records, appreciating them for something other than the artwork. <!--more-->On this record (self-titled but colloquially known as \u201cMelt\u201d or \u201c3\u201d) Gabriel\u2019s lyrics run across alienation, anxiety, dissent, voyeurism, war &#8211; all subjects that seem to say as much about 2017 as they do about 1980. The cover artwork photo is an analogue effect, created by disfiguring a Polaroid as it developed &#8211; a wonderfully 80s technique that we\u2019d be hard pushed to replicate in the same \u2018traditional\u2019 way.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l2M2gdu_tQE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Other than \u2018Games Without Frontiers\u2019, the only thing I knew about Peter Gabriel\u2019s early work was that his album covers were weird and bizarre.
