{"id":10990,"date":"2011-10-08T11:11:39","date_gmt":"2011-10-08T00:11:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stuartbuchanan.com\/?post_type=portfolio&#038;p=10990"},"modified":"2021-01-31T05:03:02","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T05:03:02","slug":"new-weird-australia-silent-hour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stuartbuchanan.com\/archives\/2011\/10\/08\/new-weird-australia-silent-hour\/","title":{"rendered":"New Weird Australia &#038; The Silent Hour &#8211; Spartak, Brain Drain &#038; The Deadly Nightshades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stuartbuchanan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/NWA-The-Silent-Hour.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10993\" src=\"http:\/\/stuartbuchanan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/NWA-The-Silent-Hour.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nTSH:XVIII &amp; NEW WEIRD AUSTRALIA present<br \/>\n<strong>SPARTAK<br \/>\nBRAIN DRAIN<br \/>\nTHE DEADLY NIGHTSHADES<\/strong><!--more--><br \/>\nSATURDAY 8TH OCTOBER 2011<br \/>\nTHE SILENT HOUR Level 1, 77-83 William St, Woolloomooloo<br \/>\n[TSH] presented a special night in conjunction with New Weird Australia to launch \u2018<em>Nippon<\/em>\u2018, the third album by Canberra electro-acoustic duo <strong>Spartak<\/strong> and first on NWA\u2019s New Editions imprint.<br \/>\n<strong>SPARTAK<\/strong><br \/>\nFormed by Shoeb Ahmad and Evan Dorrian in 2007, Spartak have performed regularly around Australia, SE Asia and Japan alongside the likes of My Disco, Lawrence English, Lucky Dragons, Minamo and Andrew Pekler with their textural improvisations on guitar, drum kit, electronics and other found sounds . \u2018Nippon\u2019 was recorded while on tour in Japan earlier this year and suitably follows their last album \u2018Verona\u2019 (released on the English label Low Point) with it\u2019s opposing influences of sound manipulation and hardcore\/indie rock.<br \/>\n<strong>BRAIN DRAIN <\/strong><br \/>\nBrain Drain is a Sydney based artist who straddles the divide between structure and improvisation, often revelling in the contrast between the two. His primarily guitar-driven pieces centre around creating both mood and rhythm through loops and using this repetition as a foundation on which to improvise. Since 2010, Brain Drain has released three albums: a self-titled debut cassette, the follow-up Wahine Division, and the collaborative album, Popolice Versus Brain Drain. <a href=\"http:\/\/braindrain3053.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">braindrain3053.tumblr.com\/<\/a><br \/>\n<strong>THE DEADLY NIGHTSHADES<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Deadly Nightshades are a brother sister duo making experimental vocal folk music in their hometown of Sydney.
