{"id":10635,"date":"2004-09-15T08:42:05","date_gmt":"2004-09-14T22:42:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stuartbuchanan.com\/?p=10635"},"modified":"2021-01-31T05:11:31","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T05:11:31","slug":"dj-rupture-beans-ozi-balta-the-stills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stuartbuchanan.com\/archives\/2004\/09\/15\/dj-rupture-beans-ozi-balta-the-stills\/","title":{"rendered":"DJ Rupture, Beans, Ozi Balta, The Stills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>DJ RUPTURE<\/strong>\u00a0[U.S.\/SPAIN]<br \/>\n<strong>high resolution<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/negrophonic.com\/mp3\/demo\/dj_rupture--high_resolution.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\nfollowing the\u00a0<strong>nettle<\/strong>\u00a0post, here&#8217;s some more of barcelona-based <strong>dj rupture<\/strong> (pictured). although recorded under his &#8216;DJ&#8217; name, this also drops some eastern influence, albeit lower in the mix &#8211; the predominant feel is sample-heavy midtempo broken beat, with a vocal ripped from\u00a0<strong>aaliyah<\/strong>\u00a0coming halfway through. things build to a more frantic pace towards the end, hitting some quality breakcore around the 3 minute mark. unlike some of the more excessive territories explored by<strong>\u00a0kid606<\/strong>\u00a0et al, rupture manages to keep everything together, making the whole thing completely listenable. good on &#8216;im.<br \/>\n<strong>BEANS<\/strong>\u00a0[US]<br \/>\n<strong>diamond halo grenade\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.warprecords.com\/beans\/Beans_Diamond_Halo_Grenade.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\nthis track is taken from\u00a0<strong>beans<\/strong>&#8216; new warp records album &#8216;shock city maverick&#8217; (see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.warprecords.com\/beans\/epk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warp epk<\/a>). beans has always been on the electronic side of hip hop, collaborating in the past with fine folks such as\u00a0<strong>prefuse 73<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>el-p<\/strong>. this track takes him further into beat-driven electronica, however for heavier exploration in this area, check out &#8216;bubonic&#8217; on the new e.p. &#8216;down by law&#8217; &#8211; produced by mark pritchard (jedi knights, reload), it&#8217;s closer in feel to some of the two-step electronica mapped out by\u00a0<strong>dizzee rascal<\/strong>\u00a0on his new &#8216;showtime&#8217; album. dizzee has stolen the lead from so many people in the last 12 months, making everything else sound a little dated. fortunately, beans is coming up fast behind &#8211; the new album hopefully will prove the point. you can also still download the excellent\u00a0<strong>mutescreamer (prefuse 73 mix)<\/strong>\u00a0here:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/downloads.warprecords.com\/beans_mutescreamer_prefuse_73_vocal_mix.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\n<strong>OZI BATLA<\/strong>\u00a0[AUSTRALIA]<br \/>\n<strong>starship troopers<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/svc002.bne102dv.server-web.com\/gallery\/mp3\/Ozi%20Batla-Starship_Troopers.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\nheard any aussie hip hop yet? well, there&#8217;s a huge scene down here &#8211; ranging from the party hop of folks like\u00a0<strong>the herd<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>koolism<\/strong>\u00a0to more leftfield tunes from the likes of the excellent\u00a0<strong>hermitude<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>macromantics<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>ozi batla<\/strong>\u00a0(from the well-respected &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elefanttraks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">elefant traks<\/a>&#8216; stable) falls somewhere in between all this. he definitely has the aussie MC stylings, however lyrically he&#8217;s coming from a darker corner. the above track featured on &#8216;the elefant collection&#8217; volume one.<br \/>\n<strong>THE STILLS<\/strong>\u00a0[CANADA]<br \/>\n<strong>retour a vega<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.viceland.com\/videos\/blogpage\/01-Retour-a-Vega-MASTERED.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\nthanks to the folks at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vice-recordings.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vice recordings<\/a>, here&#8217;s a little rarity &#8211; montreal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>the stills<\/strong>\u00a0with a french language track, proving there&#8217;s so much more to rock than dirty boring bands like\u00a0<strong>jet<\/strong>. switching to new york in 2002, the band hooked up with both the\u00a0<strong>yeah yeah yeahs\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>interpol<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; if you&#8217;re going to make friends with anyone in manhattan, that seems like a pretty good start. their album is called &#8216;logic will break your heart&#8217; and, on the strength of this track, is definitely worth investigation.<br \/>\n<strong>+++ thanks etc +++<\/strong><br \/>\na heads up to thomas barlett at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">salon.com<\/a>\u00a0(check out the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/ent\/music\/review\/wmd\/2004\/08\/11\/wmd\/index_np.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wednesday morning download<\/a>\u00a0section) for his kinds words on\u00a0<strong>fat planet<\/strong>, thanks too to the ever-excellent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.betterpropaganda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">better propaganda<\/a>\u00a0for their front page link to this &#8216;ere blog (check out their recent mp3 additions for diplo, milosh and solvent). thanks also to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.queeporganicmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">queep<\/a>\u00a0for the link + props &#8211; an interesting site to check out, if you like discovering new music with more a dancefloor friendly appeal, this is a good pitstop. in other &#8216;fat planet in the news&#8217; news&#8230; i also managed to worm my way into one of the main sunday newspapers here &#8211;\u00a0<strong>the sun herald<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; rambling on about &#8216;chip music&#8217; and making some dodgy comparisons to conceptual art &#8211; hilarious! it&#8217;s not posted online, so you&#8217;ll just have to take my word for it&#8230;.<br \/>\ni&#8217;m not a fan of\u00a0<strong>metallica<\/strong>, but you must see their documentary &#8216;some kind of monster&#8217; &#8211; it&#8217;s one of the most compelling movies i&#8217;ve seen in a long time. if metal&#8217;s not your bag, fear not &#8211; there&#8217;s very little music throughout, just a never-ending parade of oddly life-affirming moments as the band struggle with their own internal disputes and an impending fear of failure.
