{"id":10629,"date":"2004-09-24T08:14:15","date_gmt":"2004-09-23T22:14:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stuartbuchanan.com\/?p=10629"},"modified":"2021-01-31T05:12:41","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T05:12:41","slug":"shiffai-issa-bagayogo-mann-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stuartbuchanan.com\/archives\/2004\/09\/24\/shiffai-issa-bagayogo-mann-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"Shiffai, Issa Bagayogo, Mann Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>free&#8217;n&#8217;legal african mp3s are hard to come by, yet it seems like the old analogy with public transport applies here. you wait an age and nothing appears &#8211; then three come along at once&#8230;<br \/>\n<strong>SHIFFAI<\/strong>\u00a0[SENEGAL]<br \/>\n<strong>savages<\/strong>\u00a0<s>mp3<\/s><br \/>\nsenegal is shaping up to be home of african hip hop with some solid releases so far from\u00a0<strong>positive black soul<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>daara j<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>pee froiss<\/strong>. there&#8217;s a site decicated to senegalese hip hop called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.senerap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">senerap<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; i&#8217;ve yet to have a full exploration, but it seems to be the perfect place to start our education. through the site, i discovered\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nomadicwax.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nomadic wax<\/a>, a label who&#8217;ve just released a compilation entitled &#8216;african underground vol. 1: hip-hop senegal&#8217; (available to buy online from november). they&#8217;ve also released an album from senegalese hip hop artist\u00a0<strong>shiffai<\/strong>\u00a0entitled &#8216;the chosen one&#8217; which was produced by NY&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>nomad<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>shiffai<\/strong>\u00a0mixes english and his native wolof language, and there&#8217;s undoubtedly some patois thrown in for good measure. any hip hop head will get their kicks from this great mix of traditional and contemporary &#8211; the sound of hip hop coming gloriously back to its roots.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">update 260904: nomadic wax are in the process of removing mp3s from their site, and have asked us to link to streams instead &#8211;\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nomadicwax.com\/\">head on over the site<\/a>\u00a0to listen to streams from both shiffai and from the forthcoming compilation.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>ISSA BAGAYOGO<\/strong>\u00a0[MALI]<br \/>\n<strong>bana<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixdegreesrecords.com\/download.php?sc=SDR&amp;id=DC9BO9VRW9LV\">direct download mp3<\/a><br \/>\nmuch like senegal, mali also has a strong output of contemporary artists &#8211;\u00a0<strong>oumou sangare<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>tinariwen<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>rokia traore<\/strong>\u00a0to name a few.<strong>\u00a0issa bagayogo<\/strong>\u00a0is part of the roster belonging to san francisco&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sixdegreesrecords.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">six degrees<\/a>\u00a0label. six degress have also been responsible for bringing india&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>karsh kale<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>midival punditz<\/strong>\u00a0to the fore, along with algeria&#8217;s excellent\u00a0<strong>dj cheb i sabbah<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>issa<\/strong>\u00a0is their first african signing and the above mp3, &#8216;bana&#8217;, has at it&#8217;s base a midtempo, dubhouse, four-four shuffle, that fortunately avoids the trappings of afro-house (i&#8217;ll confess straight up that ive never been an afro-house fan). this is apparently due to the fact that issa still records in mali, rather than with western producers, thus avoiding the temptation to beef it up for the dancefloor. got to applaud\u00a0<em>that<\/em>\u00a0decision!
