{"id":10613,"date":"2004-10-13T06:16:02","date_gmt":"2004-10-12T20:16:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stuartbuchanan.com\/?p=10613"},"modified":"2021-01-31T05:12:41","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T05:12:41","slug":"machinedrum-omzo-slam-revolution-cyne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stuartbuchanan.com\/archives\/2004\/10\/13\/machinedrum-omzo-slam-revolution-cyne\/","title":{"rendered":"Machinedrum, Omzo, Slam Revolution, Cyne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MACHINEDRUM\u00a0[U.S.]<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>$$legs<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/producto-valvo.com\/%7Ematt\/music\/misc\/03%20$$legs.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\n<strong>mltply<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/producto-valvo.com\/%7Ematt\/music\/misc\/09%20Mltply.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\ni&#8217;m new to these guys, but the ever-helpful (and wallet-loosening)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bleep.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bleep.com<\/a>\u00a0describes their last album (&#8216;now you know&#8217;) as a release &#8220;that helped define the digital\/cutup hip hop sound&#8221;. and there&#8217;s infinite shades of early\u00a0<strong>funkstorung<\/strong>\u00a0in there &#8211; i adore the germans&#8217; &#8216;additional productions&#8217; release from way back, it was a genuine eye-opener for me, in that i&#8217;d never heard anything quite like it. micro-editing matched with dust + scratches taken to the extreme, all the while retaining an all important sense of ryhtym and melody. their mixes for both\u00a0<strong>wu tang clan<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>bjork<\/strong>\u00a0still remain classics of their genre. but we&#8217;re talking about\u00a0<strong>machinedrum<\/strong>\u00a0here &#8211; and it would be unfair to wholly associate them with another artist. the two tracks above are taken from their forthcoming\u00a0<strong>merck<\/strong>\u00a0release &#8216;bizness&#8217;. &#8216;$$legs&#8217; is all dirt and beats and absolutely delicious, whereas &#8216;mltply&#8217; is built around a great flute loop and a head-nodding 4-4, with what sounds like spliced guitar dropping in halfway through. the last minute disintegrates the track completely, furious editing taking the song to the edge of destruction &#8211; ouch! now that\u00a0<strong>funkstorung<\/strong>\u00a0have moved onto much more accessible territory with their latest album, maybe it&#8217;s left to\u00a0<strong>machinedrum<\/strong>\u00a0to carry the torch for the glitch hip hop genre? [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.m3rck.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">merck site<\/a>] + check out an older\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mono211.com\/content\/releases\/mtkmp76.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">free mp3 release<\/a>\u00a0from monotonik.<br \/>\n<strong>OMZO<\/strong>\u00a0[SENEGAL]<br \/>\n<strong>missalu aduna<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nomadicwax.com\/MP3\/03.%20Omzo.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\n+<br \/>\n<strong>SLAM REVOLUTION<\/strong>\u00a0[SENEGAL]<br \/>\n<strong>wax degg<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nomadicwax.com\/MP3\/12.%20Slam%20Revolution.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\nmore african hip-hop thanks to our friends at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nomadicwax.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nomadic wax<\/a>. both tracks are taken from their new release &#8220;african underground vol. 1 hip-hop senegal&#8221; which aims to provide a contemporary snap-shot from what is arguably africa&#8217;s home of hip hop. unlike many compilations claiming to be the &#8216;real deal&#8217;, this is actually the genuine article &#8211; recorded on location in dakar, calling on artists that you&#8217;re unlikely to hear anywhere else any time soon.\u00a0<strong>omzo<\/strong>\u00a0(pictured) takes a less agressive musical approach than many of his american counterparts, but his lyrics are (apparently) no less incisive. his 2000 release &#8216;kunu abal a beut&#8217; (trans: &#8216;the hand that leads is the hand that rules&#8217;) is cited as having a direct effect on the elections of the time, when the standing government was ousted.\u00a0<strong>slam revolution<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8216;wax degg&#8217; is my favourite of the two, mostly due to the production skills on display and i love listening to on-going rhymes in a seemingly impenetrable language &#8211; especially when the only english you&#8217;ll hear is the occasional &#8220;fucker!&#8221; dropped into the mix.\u00a0<strong>slam revolution<\/strong>\u00a0are one of the dakar&#8217;s original crews, founded by\u00a0<strong>shaffai<\/strong>\u00a0(see recent post) and who have since gone their separate ways. according to info from nomadic wax: &#8220;the crew recently suffered a devastating loss when fellow mc and longtime friend\u00a0<strong>mohammed ba\u00a0<\/strong>(aka tipse) was murdered while on a religious pilgrimage to touba (senegal\u00eds religious center) and is still an unsolved mystery&#8221;. purchase &#8216;african undergound volume one&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0002ZQGAQ\/qid%3D1095808684\/sr%3D11-1\/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1\/103-7874795-1810232\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong>CYNE<\/strong>\u00a0[U.S.]<br \/>\n<strong>steady<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/studentweb.ncf.edu\/matthew.hettich\/01CYNE.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\na miami-based hip hop crew who have been releasing tunes on must!delicious \/ rice and beans and are expected to drop a new album on the excellent city center offices label in 2005. i don&#8217;t know how many other hip hop artists appear on the cco label, but my knowledge of them extends mostly to deep, lush electronica &#8211; their 2000 compilation &#8216;cashier escape route&#8217; (an essential purchase) featured artists such as\u00a0<strong>skanform<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>solvent<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>to rococo rot<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>pole<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>isan<\/strong>. which suggests interesting potential from\u00a0<strong>cyne<\/strong>\u00a0and possibly a critical release when the album drops. the above mp3 is taken from their early e.p. &#8216;movement&#8217;
