Ohs, Styrofoam, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Balun, White Hole, The MFA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>here we are again, another week in international music-land. playlist for yesterday&#8217;s radio show can be found right\u00a0<a href=\"file:\/\/\/Users\/stubuchanan\/Dropbox\/Fat%20Planet\/v1%20Archive\/Blog\/Site%20Archive%20(2004-05)\/playlist.html\">here<\/a>\u00a0and what follows is a slew of likely contenders who muddled their way on-air during our 120 minute round-the-world excursion &gt;&gt;<br \/>\nHEXES AND OHS\u00a0[CANADA] (pictured)<br \/>\n<strong>alive until saturday night<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hexesandohs.ca\/mp3\/02alivetilsat.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\nthanks to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysteryandmisery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0mystery and misery<\/a>\u00a0for turning me onto these guys, a rare fusion that takes the all the most electrifying parts of the electro-rock-post-punk boom, and mixes it up with smart-ass electronica. truly a tasty treat. they are a couple (this fact seems to surface a great deal, yet only in the context of them trying to distance themselves from the concept &#8211; odd&#8230;), heidi donnelly and edmund lam and were formerly known as\u00a0<strong>a vertical mosaic<\/strong>. influences cited include\u00a0<strong>new order<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>the velvet underground<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>stereolab<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>tortoise<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>simon and garfunkel<\/strong>\u00a0(i wonder who plays who in that role playing game?). check them out, ahead of their 2005 debut, at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hexesandohs.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hexesandohs.ca<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong>STYROFOAM<\/strong>\u00a0[BELGIUM]<br \/>\n<strong>vs TRISTEZA casio (styrofoam mix)<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mp301.epitonic.com\/files\/reg\/songs\/mp3\/Tristeza-Casio.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\n<strong>styrofoam<\/strong>&#8216;s new album &#8216;nothing&#8217;s lost&#8217; is a killer &#8211; certainly the album of the week over at fat planet, if ever we had such a thing.\u00a0<strong>styrofoam<\/strong>\u00a0is belgian producer arne can petegem and for this new album on morr, he&#8217;s pulled together an a-list supporting cast &#8211; markus from<strong>\u00a0the notwist<\/strong>, valerie from\u00a0<strong>lali puna<\/strong>, ben from\u00a0<strong>death cab for cutie<\/strong>\u00a0\/\u00a0<strong>postal service<\/strong>, andrew from\u00a0<strong>american analog set<\/strong>\u00a0and, lo and behold, the wonderful\u00a0<strong>alias<\/strong>\u00a0from the anticon collective. with that kind of assistance, you can expect some fine results. you hear samples from the album over at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.morrmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">morrmusic.com<\/a>. free&#8217;n&#8217;legal sytrofoam mp3s seem hard to come by, so i&#8217;ve posted this one from epitonic, taken from\u00a0<strong>tristeza<\/strong>&#8216;s 2002 release mixed signals. more on\u00a0<strong>tristeza<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epitonic.com\/artists\/tristeza.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong>MAHER SHALAL HASH BAZ<\/strong>\u00a0[JAPAN]<br \/>\n<strong>sunrise<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dominorecordco.com\/resources\/mp3s\/01-Sunrise.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\nthe domino records site doesn&#8217;t reveal a great deal about duo tori and reiko kudo. this track is taken from an album entitled &#8216;blues du jour&#8217; &#8211; a collection of 41 tracks recorded over two sessions in east kilbride in scotland. their previous album &#8216;return visti to rock mass&#8217; featured a modest 83 songs. it took some google-digging, but i finally found some information on the band &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/enjoyment.independent.co.uk\/music\/interviews\/story.jsp?story=284178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a 2002 interview from the independent<\/a>. on my searching the words &#8216;shambolic&#8217;, &#8216;syd barrett&#8217; and &#8216;kitchen sink &#8216;surfaced a great deal, so hopefully you&#8217;re beginning to get a sense of where this odd japanese excursion might take you.<br \/>\n<strong>BALUN<\/strong>\u00a0[PUERTO RICO]<br \/>\n<strong>senecio (revisited)<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/download\/os040\/os040-02_-_Balun_-_Senecio_Revisited.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\nseems that i owe quite a favour to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysteryandmisery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mystery and misery<\/a>\u00a0this week &#8211; this is the second post that i&#8217;ve drawn music from today. well, now you know. mp3 blogging is one huge happy(ish) family, we all learn from each other, right? moving on&#8230;\u00a0<strong>balun<\/strong>\u00a0are a three-piece from puerto rico, with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.balun.tk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a sweet site<\/a>\u00a0and a quartet of tunes available to download from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/audio\/audio-details-db.php?collection=observatory_online&amp;collectionid=os040&amp;from=collectionSpotlight&amp;PHPSESSID=60ca60ead901029e063118486705ea50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">archive.org<\/a>. i&#8217;m getting the feeling that central and south american electronica is growing in favour and it&#8217;s certainly finding some public attention beyond appaearing on the now-standard &#8216;neuvo latino&#8217; compilations. i tried to have a crack at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonic360.com\/compilations\/argentina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beatwave&#8217;s argentinian electronica<\/a>\u00a0comp, but apparently there&#8217;s itunes issues which prevents it from being sold in the US or UK. worth keeping an eye on for future developments.<br \/>\n<strong>WHITE HOLE<\/strong>\u00a0[GERMANY]<br \/>\n<strong>peter builts<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitty-yo.net\/mp3\/Peter_Builts.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\ni&#8217;ve been wanting to get a post together for this band for a while, following their very smart &#8216;pink album&#8217; on kitty-yo. their track &#8216;charterflug&#8217; on kitty-yo&#8217;s &#8216;futurism ain\u00b4t shit to me&#8217; was the first pointer that this was going to be an interesting release. there&#8217;s so much great german electronic music out there that&#8217;s it very hard to keep track of what&#8217;s going on &#8211; there seems to be another great berlin artist every other week dropping into the fat planet sphere (what are gonna do?).\u00a0<strong>white hole<\/strong>\u00a0are however adopting more hip hop influences into their music, side-stepping the clean purity of most germanic electronica for something a little more organic. tasty.<br \/>\n<strong>THE MFA<\/strong>\u00a0[WALES \/ LONDON]<br \/>\n<strong>the difference it makes (edit)<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/villagestore.bordercommunity.com\/public\/demos\/03bc-a1.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\ni don&#8217;t like to post edits, but i&#8217;ve been loving the\u00a0<strong>superpitcher<\/strong>\u00a0mix of this track. eight minutes of glory that grabs the honour of being the first track in a long while to give me goosebumps on five consecutive listens. amazing. this is the original mix and is sadly curtailed, but hoepfully you&#8217;ll get an idea of what&#8217;s going on&#8230;
