{"id":10560,"date":"2004-12-07T15:29:51","date_gmt":"2004-12-07T04:29:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stuartbuchanan.com\/?p=10560"},"modified":"2021-01-31T05:12:40","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T05:12:40","slug":"shank-singapore-sling-miss-kittin-the-hacker-cobra-killer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stuartbuchanan.com\/archives\/2004\/12\/07\/shank-singapore-sling-miss-kittin-the-hacker-cobra-killer\/","title":{"rendered":"Shank, Singapore Sling, Miss Kittin &amp; The Hacker, Cobra Killer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>mp3s from artists (or their associates&#8230;) who featured on this week&#8217;s show &gt;&gt;<strong><br \/>\nSHANK<\/strong>\u00a0[GERMANY]<br \/>\n<strong>oust<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grooveattack.com\/mp3\/non14_01.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\nmy guest today was germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>burnt friedman<\/strong>\u00a0(pictured) &#8211; an artist whose experiments in genres range from dub, jazz and latin to techno, ambient and more. two of his projects stand out &#8211;\u00a0<strong>burnt friedman and the nu dub players<\/strong>\u00a0and his collaboration with\u00a0<strong>uwe schmidt<\/strong>\u00a0(aka\u00a0<strong>atom heart \/ senor coconut<\/strong>) on\u00a0<strong>flanger<\/strong>, released through ninja tune. unfortunately for burnt and myself, and all the show&#8217;s listeners, we had a classic culture clash &#8211; neither of us seemed to really understand each other (glaswegian meets reticent german), so the interview wasn&#8217;t exactly full of fireworks. that aside, burnt&#8217;s selection of tracks was impressive and allowed the music to speak for itself (as there wasn&#8217;t any other choice&#8230;). my search for free&#8217;n&#8217;legal burn downloads wasn&#8217;t very fruitful, but i&#8217;ve included a track here from\u00a0<strong>shank<\/strong>, a team of six imporvisers from berlin, which opens the compilation &#8216;difficult easy listening&#8217; on burnt&#8217;s label\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nonplace.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nonplace<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nSINGAPORE SLING<\/strong>\u00a0[ICELAND]<br \/>\n<strong>life is killing my rock n roll<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stinkyrecords.com\/audio\/ss_lifekilling.mp3\">mp3<\/a><br \/>\na new album from this band, who featured earlier this year on fat planet. this time around, their trademark &#8216;fuzz rock&#8217; sound has been more perfectly honed, coming up with dark, brittle guitar pop, the like of which has been rarely spotted since\u00a0<strong>the jesus and mary chain<\/strong>. finland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>dead combo<\/strong>\u00a0had a crack at it recently, but\u00a0<strong>singapore sling<\/strong>\u00a0play down any electronic influence and instead head for straight-up rock n roll purity!
