apologies for lack of recent updates. fbi
is having its first birthday and simultaneous supporter drive
- it means long hours at work, and long hours of sleep too...
we're an unfunded community radio station, 100% independent,
and we therefore need as many listeners to convert to financial
supporters to ensure our long-term survivial. if you're living
in sydney and do listen to fbi, then please
click here to read about how you can support the station.
it costs from only $3 a month and helps to keep new music
from around the world pumping on your stereo.
not
only is fbi one year old, fat planet is too! so this week's
radio show was a skewed 'best of' - playing some of my favourite
tracks from the last twelve months. click
here for the playlist. to celebrate, i'm putting together
a downloadable compilation of top mp3s from the last year.
and that'll be with you any day now.... :-)

TRANJOIK [NORWAY]
mawlid el nur / anna f (mutamassik mix) site
coming
late to the table is always disappointing, especially with
an artist of such a high calibre as mutamassik
(left). i found a split cd at the weekend - two dj sets, one
by dj rupture (from spain) and the other
from mutamassik. both are of exceptional
high quality and were created to celebrate each artists' individual
performances with the bidouin crew in dubai (more information
on this release here).
mutamassik is of egyptian descent and lives
in brooklyn - from that description, and the fact that the
split cd is released through kid 606's tigerbeat6
offshoot, violent turd, you can get a fair idea of what to
expect from her work: mixing rai and other middle eastern
sounds with gloriously fucked-up beats and hard glitches.
if the traditionalism of world music leaves you cold, then
this will reinvigorate your belief in sounds from outside
of your back yard. the above mp3 is one of the few mutamassik
projects i can find to freely download - you'll need to subscribe
to this norwegian band's mailing list to get i though, but
i think it's worth the effort.
THE BALDWIN BROTHERS feat MIHO HATORI [US:
CHICAGO / JAPAN]
dream girl mp3
yeah, so the blog subtitle is NEW international music, but
you've got give yourself a break now and again... especially
when the talent is as good a calibre as former cibo
matto member, miho hatori. it's
insanely difficult to get any back catalogue cibo releases
in australia, and even miho's last album 'smokey and miho'
is proving impossible to track down. time to bite the bullet
and order from overseas methinks... personal issues aside,
this is a great jazz-breaks track from the chicago duo jason hinkle
and tj widner taken from the 2002 album 'cooking with lasers'.
i'll confess right up front to have heard nothing else from
the band, but there's plenty of downloads and sound clips
on the site
for further investigation - including the tight sounds of
'that's right' [mp3]
from the 'funk shui' e.p.
hi to more new blogs on the block - if you like the sounds
on fat planet, then pay a visit to the
witness exchange - we're certainly in the same ballpark,
possibly even the same dugout. recent posts include cex,
safety scissors, themselves,
fridge and more. also aloha to heraclitus
sayz (the return of the lo-fi), dedicated to lo-fi music
and "analog, 4-track, DIY-type music that never sees
the light of day".

some tunes from today's fat planet - check
out the playlist here. next week's
show celebrates ONE YEAR ON AIR [!], in tandem
with FBi 94.5FM's FIRST BIRTHDAY BASH (click on banner for
more info). if there's a track, artist or style you want to
here, email me and i'll try to
get your tune on air.
DOKAKA
[JAPAN]
rolling head three mp3
right now i'm listening to the new bjork
album and it's confounded my expectations. i'll come clean
right away and tell you i'm a huge admirer of her work (arguably
to the point of obsession). 'vespertine' is undoubtedly a
beautiful album, her most cohesive to date, although in that
cohesion i felt it lost some of the excitement of her previous
albums which veered radically in style from track to track
- you were never quite sure where you would be taken next.
when i heard that the new album would be mainly vocal with
few - if any - instruments being used, i thought we'd be in
the same waters, with a single tone or style dragged across
the whole set. thankfully it's not the case - 'medulla' puts
us back in the territory where we're bewildered and amazed
at every turn. yes, the soaring tracks of the previous set
are here ('oceania' being a great case in point), and while
'who is it' references much earlier beat-driven work, it's
the closing track 'triumph of a heart' that throws the challenge
to any pretenders. with it's insane beatbox stylings, i guarantee
you'll hear nothing like this all year. and the man behind
some of those freestyle mouthcapades is japanese beatbox artist
dokaka. his download
page features a huge range of tracks - some fascinating,
others just downright annoying. the above mp3 is one of the
more listenable tracks, but his cover of 'smells like teen
spirit' may well test your patience to the limit!
BEBEL
GILBERTO [BRAZIL]
simplesmente mp3
[re-post] today i played back an interview i did with bebel
recently - it was a bad phone connection which didn't do us
any favours in terms of the flow of the conversation. still,
we muddled through, although you can't really get a great
deal of depth in a ten-minute interview interview. the above
track is taken from bebel's new self-titled second album which
eschews electronica in favour of a more acoustic sound.
DISHTONE [CROATIA]
grand piano mp3
+
GHETTO BOOTIES [CROATIA]
tominockers mp3
+
NO NAME NO FAME [CROATIA]
winter poem for lost souls mp3
every
week i play a 'stopover' section where i grab three songs
from one country and play them back-to-back. the threesome
this week all came from the same source - the egoboobits
label, first drawn to my attention by no name no fame's
mladen djikic. dishtone is a repost from
last week, however the two other tracks are new to the blog.
ghetto booties (above) are a female duo from
zagreb who mix hard electro pop with gender politics, coming
out in a zone not dissimilar to chicks on speed, although
posessing a harder kick. they generally perform with laptops
and are part of the gnu girl power lounge collective whose
manifesto is based on the 'equal sharing of work, clothes,
cables, perfumes, lipstick, and open-source politics' [site].
the no name no fame track is more downtempo
than the previously posted 'beuna vista fight club' and is,
once more, a stunning piece of work.
LADY SOVEREIGN [ENGLAND]
chi-ching (cheque 1,2) register
for download
nme.com is giving you the chance to download this little
beauty - you just need to register to grab it, but this will
grant you access to more free mp3s from the site too. this
is a great slice of uk garage, rammed full of disses, from
an mc who clocks in at the ripe old age of 18. mike skinner
(aka the streets) has apparently 'made some
beats' for her.
MOUSE ON MARS [GERMANY]
mine is in yours mp3
[re-post] see post dated 040804
WAYNE & WAX [US: MASSACHUSETS]
a it dat (dj c it dat) mp3
there plenty of information and free music to download on
wayneandwax's
site. this track is taken from the album 'boston jerk'
- music he wrote, apparently, to accompany a dissertation
entitled 'routes, rap, reggae: hearing the histories of reggae
and hip-hop together'. don't be fooled by the academic reference
- 'boston jerk' is full of humour and is a smart north american
take on the contemporary jamaican sound. this is being released
through mashit
- a label i only recently discovered and i felt very sorry
that i hadn't got there sooner! a mainstay of the label is
boston's dj c, purveryor of some damn fine
breakcore. on his
own site there is a huge collection of mp3s to download
- i'll be posting some of my favourites from this catalogue
in the next week or so.
DNTEL [US: CALIFORNIA]
(this is) the dream of evan and chan (safety scissors
spilled my drink mix) mp3
played a new track from dntel today - 'don't get your hopes
up' - which samples an old depeche mode song.
i think the song is 'but not tonight' - the b-side to 'stripped'.
let's hope that comes up on 'who wants to be a millionaire'
for you very soon. the above track is a remix from 2001 and
complements a previous post where i linked to a lali
puna mix of the same track. life goes on in cycles...

had a few days away (in the bush!) and had a break from the
show last week too - so no major update at the weekend and
the emails are piling up in the mailbox.... this update is
100% taken from your emails, so thanks to you all for the
info and hopefully everyone else will get a kick out of your
work too. if you're making music in a similar vein, or just
want to spread the word on some great sounds that you've found,
email me with some info and i'll
check it out.
THE MAE SHI [US: CALIFORNIA]
revelation 3 mp3
funny this one - i played a track from the 'terrorbird'
album on the last show without realising that an email from
the mae shi's brad was sitting waiting for
me in the in-box. happy co-incidences abound. the album is
30 tracks in total, nothing over two and a half minutes and
most tracks substantially under that length. it's incredibly
diverse too, with sounds ranging from merzbow-like
screams of guitar to fat electro pop. definitely worth investigating
further, check out the web site here.
DJ
SO SU MI [CANADA]
steve albeenie can lick my weenie mp3
and another example of visiting a site and getting a simultaneous
email through via co-incidental transcendental mailways. hello
to suhrid manchanda aka dj so su mi from
montreal. su was guitarist a band called da bloody
gashes (feat members of les georges leningrad
- check them out too for wonderful weirdness) and
is now making some seriously fucked up glitch electro breaks
with a great lo-fi edge. cheers too for su for directing me
(via his
blog) to a couple of mp3 blogs that i had previously missed
out on, namely robot
is smashed by punctuality and an
idiot's guide to dreaming. go see!
LACKLUSTER [FINLAND]
line noise - venutian travels (mix 2) mp3
great to hear from lackluster following on
from last month's post. the above mp3 is the 2nd mix for florida-based
line noise. you can now listen to streams
and buy lackluster's 'showcase' album (on
the merck label) through warp's bleep
site.
DISHTONE [CROATIA]
grand piano mp3
well, it's all happening in croatia it seems :-) following
on from the amazing no name no fame, comes
dishtone - and thanks to ante frankic from
the 'el seguendo' show on radio kl in split, croatia for getting
in touch and passing on the link. of course, it's near on
impossible to know much about the artist(s) involved as i
don't speak the language, so we are left solely with our ears
to provide some guidance throughout this strangely connected
yet strangely impenetrable world of international music...
this mp3 sounds like a mix between both digital and analog
although i suspect it's all in the programming. the live drum
sounds + glockenspiel in this slice of electronica lend a
slight jazz feel to proceedings as it chugs along. a true
head-nodder! [site]
THE FEENOM CIRCLE [US: SAN FRANCISCO]
the pawn shop mp3
cheers to roger from feenom circle for dropping
me a line - check out the above track, some midtempo hip hop
with sweet production, pulling influences from anticon for
sure. other mp3s, available from their
site, are a little more straight up, but pretty solid
if you like it old school.
VON INA [US: SAN FRANCISCO]
same sad song mp3
the sf examiner calls them 'dance-rock foxes' and i guess
there's a crushing inevitably about media getting hot under
the collar whenever a four-piece girl band get loud and nasty.
check out their press
page and see how many superlatives relating to feral animals
you can find, it's very frigging odd. anyway, von
ina have rightly been dropped into the same post-punk
bracket as !!! and their ilk, however the
above track betrays a more rockin' heart which makes the whole
project that little bit more kick-ass. like a fox. or a ferret.
or maybe a stoat?
CRIX CRAX CRUX [US: FLORIDA]
to the birds of the limb mp3
yeah, i'm a fan of this one.. thanks to brian from frigital
records in jacksonville, florida for dropping me
a line with a few links - including this genre-bending track
from crix crax crux. good to hear that in
this day of the dull 70s rock revival that there's still a
place for skewed guitar-based alt.pop. still, the email did
say that frigital promotes "taut post-punk, woozy folk,
and damaged pop from the bedroom, basement and beyond"
- so you've got a rough idea of what we're looking at here...
more info and mp3s from other artists on the
frigital site.
demon lover emailed to say that s/he had found some links
relating to solina - whom you might recall
i featured at the beginning of july. both pieces here
and here
are written in catallan (doh!), but it might be useful for
students of the language who simultaenously want to get into
the music scene... and there are how many out there?
also, big up to jon from blentwell
- if bandwidth means nothing to you, then check out his site
for loads of links to mix sets from folks such as dj
shadow, akufen and heaps more.
also, another shout out to better
propaganda - this mp3 site just goes from strength to
strength, check out some recent free downloads to top flight
artists such as rjd2, milosh
and the totally essential boards of canada
mix of boom bip's 'last walk around mirror
lake' (one of my favourite tunes of 2004).

100804 09:15
went on a bootleg hunt on sunday night. been a while since
i'd had some new 'bastard pop' and i was keen to see how the
scene had moved on in the last few months. so here's what
i found, mostly all of which is from the uk :::
JOOLS the j-lo end theory [site]
it's no secret, i hate j-lo with a passion,
but this is probably the only piece of music i've heard where
i can actually bear to listen to her. porbably because this
is a mix of j-lo, dj shadow
and chris isaak - done to great effect. jools,
i salute you - actually making j-lo palatable!
ZIMEN pump up the rapture [site]
apparently this is only zimen's 2nd bootleg,
which makes the results even more amazing - a tight beat-for-beat
splicing of 'house of jealous lovers' with MARRS'
'pump up the volume'. probably my favourite boot for a while
and destined to find its way into one of my dj sets before
long.
LIONEL l.s.f. (lionel's galang re-edit) [site]
this is a mix which (i believe) mainly features an artist
called kasabian - never heard of them, living
down under it's maybe not suprising. lionel
however drops in MIA's 'galang' plus some
of franz ferdinand's 'take me out' and comes
out the other end with a downtempo killer that is truly top
notch. for the ipod, not the dancefloor.
MCSLEAZY she wants to move (mcsleazy remix)
[site]
great little electronic workout of the NERD
modern-day classic. there are so many boots and even official
remixes of this track (see also anything by kelis...) that
it's hard to differentiate between the good and the bad. mcsleazy
however drops a mix that's worthy of featuring on an official
release and even trumps some of those put out by the band
themselves (witness the DFA mix, not the
duo's best mix...)
POJ greatest trickster [site]
poj has been on my 'must visit' list for
a while, i've loved his fucked up glitch versions of top ten
commercial tunes (see his great mix of 'crazy in love' by
way of example). this track marries kelis
(surprise, surprise...) with sister sledge.
yes, so kelis is overused in bootlegs, but by turning 'trick
me' into a disco track, poj has carried it off with class
and panache! who'd have thought it :-)
XEROX tipsy kids [site]
finally, something a little less serious (if possible) - xerox
take j-kwon's 'tipsy' and do the obvious
thing, so obvious in fact that no-one else thought to do it
- which is why this a little piece of genius. yup, add queen's
'we will rock you' to j-kwon's handclaps and throw in 'kids
will rock you' too ... kindergarten kids singing queen, backed
by j-kwon ... welcome to the new century of music :-)

BUFFALO DAUGHTER [JAPAN]
five minutes mp3
a
great joy today to be able to playback an interview i did
last week with sugar yoshinaga from japanese trio, buffalo
daughter. the band have just released a fine new
album entitled 'psychic' - disposing of the 3-minute excursions
of the 2001 release 'i' in favour of what sugar calls 'a jam
session album [five tracks over fifty minutes]. the above
track from 'i' is the only legal mp3 that i can find (from
their epitonic
page) - if you come across, let me know. buffalo
daughter play candy's apartment in sydney on 25th
august and fbi 94.5fm will be recording the show for later
broadcast. i'm planning to transcribe today's interveiw and
post it here soon (provided my life doesn't get in the way...).
[site]
ASIAN DUB FOUNDATION [ENGLAND]
1000 mirrors (feat. sonia metha) mp3
played a great remix of the '1000 mirrors' track featuring
sinead o'connor today, the visionary underground
mix which you can find on the single, lifted from last year's
album 'enemy of the enemy'. the above mp3 is a different version
(i'm presuming an earlier mix) with sonia metha
on vocals. sonia actually features as backing on the sinead
version, so it's great to hear her up front in this take.
and by a weird co-incidence, i also have an ADF interview
that i've promising to transcribe too ... i must get busy...
[site]
MOSQUITOS [BRAZIL / US: NEW YORK]
boombox direct
download
according to their PR
company, this track from the new york based trio (with
brazilian vocalist) has been an 'ad agency favourite'. is
that the kind of thing you want to promote, not sure :-) cynicism
aside, this is a short sharp burst of portugese flavour from
the album 'sunshine barato'. and [li'l triv fact] to give
the band an air of brazilian authenticity, their debut was
recorded on a shack on ipenema beach! [site]
JIMI TENOR [FINLAND]
beyond the stars mp3
ah... jimi tenor, the godlike genius of finnish
lounge is back with a new album 'beyond the stars'. jimi's
been making a fine selection of tunes over the last ten years,
from his debut on the finnish label 'sahko', to a couple of
releases on 'warp records' in the mid/late 90s. now on germany's
kitty-yo.
the new material is up to his usual high standards, although
he's probably delving deeper into his own idiosyncratic lounge
style (witness the track i played today 'tsunami' which defies
categorisation). there's a glut of live downloads available
on his official site
and you can also experience jimi's sideline clothing label,
tenorwear. god bless 'im...
DEAD COMBO [FINLAND]
you don't look so good mp3
played the 2nd track from the single, dead combo's
cover of bowie's 'let's dance'. above mp3
is a re-post of the lead track, available now on ouput.
ZAP MAMA [ZAIRE]
nostalgie amoureuse (push it to the max boot mix)
mp3
born in zaire, marie daulne is the leader of (what was originally)
an accapella group known as zap mama. she's
taken the group in a radically new direction for their latest
release 'ancestry in progress' - immersing themselves in downtown
philly and teaming up with the roots, erykah
badu, common and ?uestlove.
the results are inevitably a curious african-american mix
of r'n'b and more tradition influences, and - if east has
to meet west to make it more palatable to western audiences
- then better to come out with something of this calibre,
rather than the watered-down afro-house that seems to be in
high circulation these days (honestly, i'm not usually this
cynical... must be 'cause i watched 'girl interrupted' last
night ...). and in saying all that, the above track (not from
the album) is a four-to-the-floor mix taken from the luka
bop site (i'm such a hypocrite!) - i experienced some
loooong download times with this one, but hopefully any hosting
snags will be resolved by the time you read this...
THE MAE SHI [US: CALIFORNIA]
vampire beats mp3
and to close, one of the artists that sits on the borderline
between genius / charlatan - the mae shi's
new album 'terrorbird' comes with a whopping 30 tracks, most
of which are under 2 minutes long, the question being, can
they actually write longer songs or does that not even matter?
is this a collection of hastily thrown-together 'bit parts'
or something more revealing / interesting? you decide and
you let me know... [site]

UNDERWATER ALIEN BEING [POLAND]
aparnet mp3
+
NARZEDZIE [POLAND]
chaos
fm mp3
from the polish
label, gb productions, here's a couple of
their many mp3s available to download. they operate under
the banner 'music played on machines' and the above tracks
dutifully demonstrates their commitment to that manifesto.
underwater alien being offer clean, precise
downtempo electronic music (u've got to love the way some
artists fully embrace the sequencer), whereas narzedzie
moves deeper into abstract territory, throwing field recordings,
strings and glitches into the mix. for many more artists and
mp3s, go to gb-productions.com/english
ASOBI
SEKSU [US: NEW YORK]
i'm happy but... mp3
here's a great curio - new york band playing punchy alt.pop-rock
with japanese female vocalist. the results are mostly a fantastic
crossover from east to west, especially when yuki sings in
her native language (like the mp3 above). the single release
'walk on the moon' is a little less successful for my tastes,
but still bears the hallmarks of some great influences like
my bloody valentine, spiritualized
and sonic youth. [site]
THINK
TWICE [FRANCE]
analyze me mp3
check the mp3 archive for a previous post from this french
band - blending driving electronic post punk with the spoken
word vocal made infamous by james murphy of the lcd
soundsystem ['losing my edge' was such a ground-breaking
release, that it's difficult not to make the obvious connection].
however think twice have enough originality to pull them apart,
particularly in the lyrical content. this track doesn't waver
much from the template set down by 'under the bombs', so the
next step could well be make or break. [label]

MOUSE
ON MARS [GERMANY]
mine is in yours mp3
if you're following the free mp3 releases from better
propaganda, then you'll undoubtedly have this - a track
from the new mouse on mars album 'radical
connector'. i haven't followed the band that closely, but
i'm assured that not only am i coming very late to the party,
but that this track is also a departure from their trademark
sound. this is mid-tempo vocal electro pop, retaining some
of their experimentation and adding significant acoustic guitar
into the mix. conversely, another track from the album - 'wipe
that sound' - is much more dancefloor friendly, which instantly
suggests that 'radical connector' is going to be a release
to pay a great deal of attention to when it drops.
STEREONOVA [ITALY]
sometimes mp3
stereonova are two italian DJs who have moved
into production, making some tidy progressive house in the
vein of sacha, digweed,
deep dish et al. they have residences on
a couple of europeean radio stations too - rotationz.be
and novaradio.de.
i'm conscious that house doesn't get much of a look-in on
this blog, so this might go some way to redressing the balance...
maybe? :-) [site]
THE REVEREND MANAGERIE [US: PENNSYLVANIA]
playtime relapse mp3
had an email from the strangely
familiar audio-sault crew inviting us to check out their
site - so i duly recommend you do. it's a community of bootleg
/ mash-up artists, with some well known names on there and
a great selection of tracks to download. many of them i haven't
come across elsewhere, so it's worth deeper investigation.
i've no idea what original sources the above track was taken
from, but its lack of familiarity makes it even more striking.
for more info on the artist, click
here.
the city slang label
(home to radio 4, calexico,
album leaf and more) runs a monthly mp3 club
- essentially a way of distributing free mp3s, with added
data capture so they know who's visiting. the selections are
hit and miss, however this month they've chosen germany's
delightful tonetraeger - a dusseldorf folktronica
duo who have roped in musicians from kreidler
(to rococo rot offshoot) and tarwater
to assist with the new album. sign up to download here.
following on from the recent bastard-pop version of the
clash's 'london calling', various mash-up artists
have had a crack at blur's 'parklife' with
wildly varying results. the obligatory vocoder cover versions
are there (have to say, getting a little bored of those now...)
however there's enough diversity to make most of us grin.
check out the drum'n'bass rework of 'end of a century' or
the splicing of blur and the beach boys on
'godlife'. [site]
also a belated hello to kate from red
lotus radio, a new addition to the blog community with
posts from outside the usual locations, taking in japan, uzbekistan,
italy, russia and more. kate was also the first blogger to
alert me to the bjork teaser mp3 and for
that i'll be eternally grateful :-)
still leaps more emails to get through - hopefully i'll find
the time to post some more mp3s before the weekend...

i always feel compelled to tell you how
the radio show went, when most of you probably can't hear
it as the station is yet to be streaming online. today felt
like a strong, robust show - loads of uptempo beats mixed
with some gorgeous electronica and some sidewipin' geetars
for good measure. how about that? check out the
playlist for a full rundown of what went to air and click
below for some downloads from some of today's artists... and,
if you can [!], tune in next sunday, AUGUST 8TH from 3pm when
i'll be talking to former beatie boys labelmates - the extra-ordinary
japanese trio buffalo daughter about their
new album and debut australian tour.
BI(F)TEK [AUSTRALIA]
unisex mp3
played a track today from the experts, a
collaboration between australian artists byron scullin and
nicole skeltys from female duo bi(f)tek.
the album 'electro city breaks' seems to be a tie-in with
the 'lonely planet' tv series, but there's very little info
online about the album (with the exception of this
page). you can get an idea of what to expect by downloading
this track from bi(f)tek's 2003 album 'frequencies
will move together' - australian electro pop at its finest.
[site]
BJORK [ICELAND]
verandi mp3
get on google and try and find the track i played today -
a preview remix (premix?) of 'triumph of a heart' from bjork's
new album 'medulla'. to whet your appetite, this mp3 is an
out-take from the 'vespertine' recording sessions, written
with with the help of bollywood composer jolly mukherjee.
CHROMEO

the album 'she's in control'. [site]
CORNERSHOP [ENGLAND]
lessons learned from rocky I to rocky III
mp3
so maybe cornershop are back, maybe they're not. the new single
(from which i played both tracks today) is titled as 'cornershop
presents bubbley kaur' and is two slices of wonderfully lo-fi
pop layered with a gorgeous hindi vocal. track it down if
you can. the above track is completely different in flavour,
pop rock from their 2002 album 'handcream for a generation'.
BEBEL GILBERTO [BRAZIL]
simplesmente mp3
as the daughter of 'the man who invented bossa', the weight
of expectation lay heavy on bebel gilberto's
shoulder for many years. her album 'tanto tempo' surpassed
most of those expectation, fusing traditional bossa groove
with contemporary electronic production. a remix collection
featuring the likes of king britt and rae
and christian didn't do any harm to her reputation
either. her new self-titled album strips away most of the
electronica in favour of more acoustic sound, and whilst that
might disappoint some die-hards, it allows her voice to come
shining through in a collection that'll no doubt have wide
appeal. tune into FAT PLANET on FBi on sunday 15th august
for my interview with bebel (and hopefully if i find the time,
i'll post a transcript too). [site]
THE GO! TEAM [ENGLAND]
junior kickstart mp3
played the track 'the power is on' from this uk group, released
through memphis industries. there's a quote on the label site
which says the go! team sound like "the yeah yeah yeahs
doing double dutch". there's a lot of seemingly contradictary
info about the band online, but as far as i can see it's centered
around the brighton musician ian
parton, who - in a scandanavian interview - namechecks
mantronix and le tigre as influences, so now you get the gist,
right?
POLYSICS [JAPAN]
married to a frenchman mp3
i first came across polysics on the sony
compilation 'japan for sale volume one' a couple of years
ago (the same album that introduced me to the glorious puffy
amiyumi). polysics are that wonderful blend of psych-out
rock with sharp pop sensibilities, something japan does very
well and very often. asianmanrecords.com describes polysics
as "a less poppy devo, mixed in with
the aggressive sounds of the bordeoms, trickle
in the energy of the dead kennedys, and topped
off with the moods of man or astroman".
which is quite something to live up to, but i think they've
nailed it.

repost: played a 'robots in disguise' remix of the above track
from a new single release on kitty-yo.
