BAURI
purple nights (electromix) mp3
::: another mp3 from racewillbegin.com,
taking the a-side to the erik levander release from yesterday.
this is a great slice of gigolo-esque retro-electro. thanks
to michael from NZ who emailed me some info about bauri.
he writes "i think his "biggest" release label-wise
has been on neo
ouija, a label run by a guy who sometimes records as metamatics,
norken and other things. martin runs his
own label, saundart, which I guess has probably folded along
with every other fucken label ever". check out some more
bauri mp3 action on his own site at bauri.tk
and while you're out and about on the superhighway, have a
look at michael's
site too. he produces music under a few names, but i especially
like the jet
jaguar material - reminds me of a more laidback akufen,
which is a very good thing indeed :-)

THE K FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE RED ARMY CHOIR
k cera cera (war is over if you want it) mp3
::: alright, so i wouldn't let it lie :-)
the k foundation are a later incarnation
of the klf, also known as the timelords,
furthermore known as the jamms (the
justified ancients of mu mu), erstwhile known as
2K etc etc (i could go on for days). the
klf was but one part of the long drummond & cauty saga
which hit maximum visibility in 1994 when they took £1,000,000
(some, but not all, of the profits from the klf years), went
to a boatshed on the isle of jura in scotland, and burned
the lot. you can read the full history of bill and jimmy here
(and i recommend that you do) and there's some amazing archive
resources here
too, all relating to their post-klf life. one such activity
was the above - extremely hard-to-find and never released
- recording, the only 'music' the k foundation ever made.
the reason it's so hard to find was that they only ever planned
to release it when world peace was achieved... more info on
the release here.
and let's take a brief moment to remember the 1992 brit
awards story:
"The KLF won the best British group trophy at the
Annual BRIT Awards. Invited to appear, they performed '3 A.M.
Eternal' as a thrash metal version with hardcore band Extreme
Noise Terror. They opened the show at London's Hammersmith
Odeon and, denied being able to throw buckets of blood over
the audience, settled for hailing them with blank bullets
from a machine gun. At the close it was announced that, "Ladies
and gentlemen, The KLF have now left the music business."
At the post awards party at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, a freshly
slaughtered sheep is left on the doorstep with a note attached:
"I died for ewe. Bon appetit.""
still on this subject (i'll get it out my system eventually),
i dug out an article
published in a magazine that myself and old mucker alan benzie
published in the 90s called thee
data base. our mate john dower interviewed
bill & jimmy shortly after the burning of the cash on
a glasgow student radio station. click
here for this rare little insight into the minds of drummond
and cauty.
and that my friends brings us to the end of the history lesson.
honestly. i swear, that's it. whatever will be, will be.

ERIK LEVANDER
bermond (bauri remix) mp3
::: very hard to find any info on this guy, other than he's
swedish :-) this is taken from the excellent mp3 label racewillbegin.com
and is the 'b-side' to a released from another swedish electronica
artist bauri. it's a beautiful offering of folktronica / post-rock.
echoing acoustic loops and a hint of far-off vocals are underlaid
with a soft, crunchy rhythm track that is barely there, coming
together for six minutes of music that (if you allow it) will
transport you somewhere quite magnificent. more from this
source to follow!

just reading back on all that klf shit -
i really do come across like a real freak... overly obsessive,
losing-my-mind-over-something-smalltime, stalker crazyboy.
i think i need to relax. honestly, i'm quite chilled when
you get to know me...
so many thanks to matt for sending me the tron
costume link, it's absolute genius. if you don't have
a lot of time on your hands, just scroll to the bottom of
the page - but make sure you catch the side view too!
congratulations to mr jay maynard and his wonderful
costume - raised a few much needed smiles in the house of
zero-g :-)
found a stack of great new online music tonight,
so u can look forward to some tasty linx over the next few
days. you can bet your rosy ass-cheek on it.
and as a miniature night-cap, check out THE BEATHUNTERS

from angie stone, bjork
and nightmares on wax. soulful
sleepy time shit. go tell yr mamma.

AUTOMATO
walk into the light mp3
::: automato are a six-piece white hip-hop group from new
york who were fortunate enough to have their debut album produced
by the dfa. instantly, for all the dedicated hipsters in the
world, this make them newsworthy - but look past the hype
for a refreshing take on hip-hop, taking the genre way past
sample-based territory, and into an interesing new space.
the label, dim mak, describes it as being suitable for fans
of "Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, Nas, Ghostface Killa"
- so now you know. today's mp3 - 'walk into the light' - features
on the album and was released as a single in decemeber 2003.
no matter how bored you think you are, you're never bored
enough for biddy
cam - this web cam "watches a couple of bungalows
somewhere in the UK, occupied by old people. you know what
old people are like .. when it snows, they clear the path
.. on pension day, they go to the post office .. in summer,
they might even stand outside!". if you can't stand the
tedium, check out the march
highlights... (cheers to lee for the link)
thanks also to iain for this exceptional
link on the use of the umlaut in rock - e.g. motorhead,
motley crue, blue oyster cult (who had the cheek to put an
umlaut above the 'o' - blue oooster cult?)

ok, one last piece on the klf ...
this morning, the tour producer (eric floyd) issued a statement
[read it here] clarifying his position
:::
"As producer of the currently touring Sweatfest World
Tour 2004 featuring C&C MUSIC FACTORY & SNAP!, it
has been brought to my immediate attention by a myriad of
strategically released, inflammatory letters & personal
statements from longtime copyright/publishing pirate, but
producer extraordinaire nevertheless, my respected colleague
& ("WTIL") video co-star, Bill Drummond (CO-founder
of The KLF), that he does NOT support this tour and (further)
charges that The KLF portion of it is a fraud because neither
he nor fellow (KLF) CO-producer, Jim Cauty are a part of it.
I respectfully issue this statement with urgency to both further
insure and assure you (my peers, the press & public alike)
that (indeed) neither of the aforementioned production wizards
will be present when this sizzling hot show touches down on
your shores. And for the record, neither will the legendary
producers of SNAP! (Michael Munzing and Luca Anzilotti) or
C&C MUSIC FACTORY (Robert Clivilles & the late, great
David Cole... may God rest his soulful soul) be there with
us either. And why should they be? This is NOT a Pop/Techno
Producers symposium, my friends... this is 'SWEATFEST', and
don't you dare underestimate the name!"
my friends, it seems we CAN make a difference after
all! :-)

!!! (chk chk chk)
there's no fucking rules, dude mp3
::: and now back to the music ... another update
from epitonic,
and if u haven't checked out this site yet, get to it. it's
one of the premiere sources for legal mp3s online, if u like
non-commercial music that is. recent updates include luomo
(aka vladislav delay), pretty girls
make graves, the fever, matmos,
martin rev (from suicide)
and heaps more. all alt.styles (well, most alt.styles...)
catered for... and i also found this little gem lurking on
there. !!!'s new album 'louden up now' will
be released on warp very soon and features more of their trademark
dancefloor-friendly post-punk - and much less self-conscious
than anything that bears the dfa stamp. the
above mp3 is taken from their self-titled debut album, released
through gsl and is a nine minute, laid-back, angular groove
with multiple layered vocal. simple and very freakin' effective.
while you're at it, check out their alter ago, outhud,
also on epitonic.

if you're following the klf thread
that began with my post on 230404, then
you might be interested to hear that wanda and i seem to have
patched things up :-)
in
response to my post on 250404, wanda
sent me this email - which includes
the following info:
"You should know that even when I've gone out
as WANDA DEE of THE KLF (which I have the written/contractual
blessing from Bill & Jimmy to do)... 'The Voice Of The
KLF'... WANDA DEE & THE KLF EXPERIENCE, etc. it would
be various unscrupulous promoters who would want to shorten
the name and capitalize on the marquee value of simply listing
"THE KLF", much to my chagrin. This even happens
to Freedom Williams of C&C MUSIC FACTORY all the time
until this day, because he and I have discussed this often.
What can we do? We win some... we lose some. After all, the
only thing far more deadlier and predictable than Mother Nature,
is Human Nature. Once shows are booked, I can do but so much
to make promoters (especially in this 'Business' of 'Show')
act any more HONORABLE, than I could get Bill & Jimmy
to do from the outset."
and
she goes on to say: "I NEVER ONCE SAID I TOOK MYSELF
ON THE ROAD "AS THE KLF". That is a lie, as the
names that were used (and sanctioned by Bill & Jimmy)
are listed above."
wanda and i have since privately emailed each other and appear
to have cleared the air. it would seem that wanda's postition
is honourable, and that in this instance the promoters are
to blame for false advertising. let's be clear once more -
the sydney gig features wanda, former KLF vocalist, performing
KLF tracks. and despite a promoters billing which reads "one
of the world's most controversial dance acts, the money burning,
crop circle cutting KLF hit Australian shores ready to create
a frenzy", the show does not feature the klf founders,
bill drummond and jimmy cauty - who, as i'm led to believe,
have not given consent for this show to be billed as "the
klf".
no more needs to be said, right? just spread the word :-)

radiohead at the entertainment centre last night,
once again surpassing expectations. too many highlights to
mention, needless to say they managed to convey both intensity
and intimacy to a venue filled with 1,000s of people. nice
to be able to hear the proverbial pin drop in a space that
large (especially during 'spinning plates'...)
woke up this morning and to my delight and surprise, i find
i have received 14 emails from wanna dee
- see the post from 23rd re: the klf. she
begins "please understand that an e-mail cannot convey
a person's "tone", so please know that mine is without
shade, malice or ill will of any kind towards you, although
you've reported and/or read erroneous and inaccurate information
about me onto the world wide web through your or various sites."
you can read the full text of her
email here, but here's the gist:
(1) she points out she's not a session singer, but a 'platinum
selling artist' in her own right. fair play.
(2) bill & jimmy sampled her vocal without permission
and, after much legal harassment, bill & jimmy agreed
to give her dues, feature her on the videos, give her credits
etc. all well and good.
(3) she then states that bill & jimmy's refusal to play
the pop game was the reason that she took herself on the road
as the klf. they weren't prepared to tour, to promote, to
be "the new beatles" as apparently their US record
company wanted them to be (yeah, i laughed too...), so she
went on the road and did it herself (without their consent).
(4) here's where things go a little pear-shaped - she writes
"THE KLF are the name of the producers... but the producers
do NOT rap, sing, dance or perform in any way. So when this
music must be brought to the masses, it is up to artists like
me ... to bring the party to the people".
therein lies the rub, THE KLF are the name of the producers.
and what do the producers do? well in this instance, the producers
had been making klf records for years before wanda showed
up, who created the mythology and identity of the project,
who master-minded all the music, who pulled everyone together
to make it happen, who created the sloganeering, the artwork,
the visuals ... and lest we forget, the producers who had
two massive hits (their biggest selling, i believe) with 3am
eternal (featuring vocalists maxine harvey and p.p.arnold)
and justified and ancient (with vocalist tammy wynette - RIP)
- neither of which featured wanna. whose hit 'what time is
love' featured one line from wanna dee - "i wanna see
you sweat'" (pls correct me if i'm wrong...).
so why is wanna advertising herself at the klf? it's
akin to charlie watts getting off his drum stool and going
on the road as the rolling stones. or ringo starr advertising
himself as the beatles. or colin from radiohead touring solo
under the radiohead name.
wanna - you've had a hard deal, that's for sure. bill &
jimmy's mission was to play the music industry, expose its
flaws and take the piss. and unfortunately, you got caught
up in an multi-million dollar selling art-prank that refused
to conform to standard promotional operations of the music
biz. i can see how this might suck, and how you might not
get the payback that would ordinarily be due from such a success,
but do us all a favour - go on the road as 'wanna dee from
the klf', or somesuch other name.
you state in your email that you were angered by the fact
that your name vanished from the klf credits - that you didn't
get the respect you deserve - which makes it doubly strange
that you should intentionally remove your name from the billing
this time around. if you are as big as artist as we now suspect
you might be, then you should have nothing to fear from exposing
yourself in this way. bill & jimmy might have originally
'stolen' your talent, but returning the favour in this way
- by passing yourself as the klf - is a little too distasteful
even for kopyright liberators the world over.

TORTOISE
it's all around you mp3
seneca mp3
::: last week i had the good fortune to interview dan bitney
from tortoise which you can hear on tomorrow's
fat planet (sunday 25th at 3pm) on fbi 94.5fm (sydney only).
if i've got the time, i might well post a transcript at some
point soon. tortoise, along with bands such as stereolab,
were amongst the early pioneers of post-rock - removing standard
rock conventions from guitar-driven music, and replacing them
with a more freeform approach, closer perhaps to jazz or even
(shock!) the prog-rock of the 70s (without the hystrionics).
their new album 'it's all around you' is more accessible than
previous offerings, and the prominence of the bass even gives
it an unexpected deep groove in places. the above mp3 is a
slightly different version to that on the album, extended
by about 90 seconds. the second mp2 is the first two minutes
from their previous album, standards, which was released through
warp in the uk.
'it
was 25 years ago today...' - the clash's
london calling was an album that passed me by as a youth -
i was too busy doin' it like a robot to my gary numan
albums. however, i'm led to believe that it's a seminal
work, and to celebrate it's quarter century, get your
bootleg on and culture deluxe have
masterminded a 'london calling' bootleg project, featuring
25 radical re-interpretations / mashups of the album. download
it here ::: there's a suggested charitable donation to
(the late) joe strummer's 'rebel woods' -
a 'future forests' project in scotland.

230404 08:30
who'd have thought that the klf
would fall victim to history revisionism? i've just seen an
ad for a gig in sydney advertising a live apperance by
the klf. my first thought, how could bill + jimmy be quite
so dumb as to get on board with a 90s revival tour? sure,
they have a habit of turning the industry on its head, but
this might be a step too far? having seen them both at the
barbican in recent years, their respective careers seemed
to have progressed far beyond the transcentral days ...
but after some googlism, here's the truth ... the tour features
wanna dee, who as vocalist and co-lyricist on some of their
tunes, has claimed the klf mantle. apparently
she also tours as "Wanda Dee & the New KLF"
and "Wanda Dee & the KLF Experience". on another
site, the writer claims that the klf had only "moderate
underground success" until wanna came along and rescued
them... stop this madness!
let's be clear.
(1) the klf were bill
drummond and jimmy
cauty - two of the cleverest and funniest men in the history
of the music industry. read 'the
manual'. read 'the
k foundation burn a million quid. read '45'
by bill drummond.
(2) wanna dee is a session singer.
check this out from klf.de:
"bill and jimi have nothing whatsoever to do with these
"concerts" and would like very much to see them
stopped, but it's difficult to pursue legal action against
her unless she performs in the UK."
for a promoter to advertise a sydney gig as "the klf"
is insane and , mark my words, i'll be shouting a great deal
about this over the next couple of weeks :-)
ok, off the freakin' soapbox and back to happy times ... la

FOUR TET
my angel rocks back and forth (icarus remix) mp3
::: those kind folk at domino have done it again,
giving away more four tet remix activity
- this time from the new e.p. (i wish they'd warn us in future,
i'd just forked out $20 for it 48 hours before hand...). this
gives true meaning to the remix form, taking the musicbox
theme from the lush original and threading it out, ticking
away for a few minutes before breaking into some chopped,
broken beats. the overlain japanese news report (i'm guessing
now...) builds the urgency before it all falls apart once
more towards the end. as you might have ascertained, it's
a beautiful trip :-)
thanks to phil who emailed re: yesterday's 00100
post - he writes "i believe the band's name isn't a binary
number at all. i had a friend tell me it's actually said ooh
ooh ee ooh ooh" ... so now we know!

00100
ene soda mp3
::: 00100 (which i assume is binary for 'four', but
could be a very misguided li'l foo') is a parallel project
for boredoms member, yoshimi. they've been
around since 1996, have opened for sonic youth
and have just released their fourth album 'kila kila kila'.
yoshimi (in case yr wondering) is the same yoshimi made famous
by the flaming lips, although i don't think
she's actually battled any pink robots in real life. 'ene
soda' comprises exclusively of bells, running water, an odd
snatch of power guitar, and is rounded off with what sounds
like some traditional japanese vocal (but can't be sure).
beat-heads + the fait-hearted should steer clear.

::: this is an incredible electronica cover
of a sonic youth track, available as a free

SONIC YOUTH
touch me i'm sick mp3
::: and for the diehards who don't approve
of such cover versions... (other than the fact that you need
to get out of the fucking door a little more often) - here's
one of my favourite sonic youth recordings
and it's not even one of their own, it's a cover of the mudhoney
classic. the yoof's web site has heaps of classic mp3s available
for free download, so
go do yr history lesson. talking of mudhoney covers, i've
just remembered matt dillon in the hollywood grunge move 'singles'...
the movie sucked of course, but there's some kitch value in
seeing dillon fronting a band called 'citizen dick', covering
the same song, but - natch - it was 'touch me, i'm dick'...
hollywood ALSO needs to get out more, am i right!? eddie veder
was in the movie with him i believe ... ok, i'll stop now.

GIRL TALK
touch 2 feel mp3
::: this
is a dirty, glitich-ridden take on the tried and tested mash-up
formula, taken from girl talk's album 'unstoppable'.
somewhere in there you'll find the amps (aka
kim deal from the pixies), sean paul,
human league and plenty of other stuff i
don't recognise. more inventive than yr standard track + track
= new track, girl talk is a guy from pittsburgh by the name
of greg gillis who used to be in band called the joysticks.

BLOCKHEAD
bullfight in ireland mp3
::: went to see rjd2 and
kid koala last night, both cranking out the
tunes across four turntables. while this was impressive in
itself, it was made all the more insane by the fact that kid
koala did it all without the aid of headphones. that impresses
me, don't know about you :-) so, in a hunt for legitimate
kid koala or rjd2 mp3s this morning (fruitless search), i
discovered that ninja
tune have very kindly given us another track from the
excellent 'music by cavelight' album from blockhead.
although this track is on the vinyl release,
it doesn't seem to appear on all versions of the cd release
- so thanks to ninja for putting that li'l hiccup right.
worrrrrrd - the beastie boys have announced
that their new album 'to the 5 boroughs' will be released
in june. produced entirely by the bb themselves, it's described
as a "homage to the city that brought Mike D, Adrock
and MCA together". a single 'ch-check it out' drops in
may, with a video featuring deforest kelley, aka bones from
star trek. it's hip-hop jim, but not as we know it ...
viral hoaxers are dumb [part one] - received
in my in box this morning ::: "Hello dear client Barclays

swollen tongue bums mp3
::: i've been meaning to post some dalek
for a while, but i've been holding off as their 'deadverse'
site (with more downloadbale audio) has been down for over
a week. it's still dead, but here's a few full-length samples
of their work. i first came across dalek on a recent wire
magazine sampler, a track taken from their collaboration with
krautrock pioneers faust. dalek - an MC from new jersey -
produces dirty, epic hip-hop - grand sweeping strings married
with loud, filthy beats. the
matador label describes the sounds as a mix of "public
enemy, beach boys (a la pet sounds),
eric b and rakim, gang starr
and my bloody valentine" - which all
seems good to me... if you
can find it, check out dalek's outstanding 'deadverse' remix
of enon's 'in this city'.
went to see eternal sunshine of
the spotless mind on monday. script by kaufman (being
john malkovich, adaptation) and directed by michel gondry
(video director - bjork, white stripes etc). i'm sure it's
a movie that's basically going to polarise people between
'genius' and 'confusing mess'. i fall into the former camp
- a beautiful, funny and often brutal movie - best of 2004
thus far.

jackson's output label (home to the rapture,
lcd soundsystem, playgroup,
black strobe and other licenced products)
and, after a short hunt, i dug up what appear to be some older
mp3s from their official site. this track is downtempo funk
with some low-key euro-freestyle dropped over the top. it's
a little laconic, however there's enough to sustain some interest
in what they might do with their output releases.
just got word that goldfrapp
are set to re-release 'strict machine' on 10th may featuring

ROBERT LIPPOCK
i can tell mp3
::: when piling through the stacks of albums and mp3s for
'fat planet', it's always a freakin' relief to find something
that stands heads and shoulders above everything else. 'top
shelf' they call it (however the hell 'they' are...). one
such album this week was robert lippock's
'falling into komeit' on monika.
it's an interesting take on the remix album genre - instead
of employing the usual team of remixers, german duo komeit
have given over their album 'falling into place' to one person,
to rococo rot member, lippock and he's reworked
the album into a stunning piece of folktronica. the above
mp3 features the vocals of komeit's julia kliemann.

ADEM
statued mp3
::: adem is one piece of the fridge
puzzle, the trio that also includes keiran hebden aka four
tet [fridge mp3 links due soon]. adem ilhan is the
bass player for fridge, but with his new solo album 'homesongs',
he's delivered a salvo comprised largely of stripped-back,
acoustic songs, albeit with an occasional organic sample flourish.
the above mp3 was released as a 7" last year and is featured
on the album, released through domino.

GONZALES
lovertits mp3
::: only being familiar with peaches' version
from 'the teaches of peaches', this re-recording from gonzales
was something of a surprise. he recently re-worked his back
catalogue for the album 'z' and this is a good flavour of
what to expect. i prefer peaches' more basic and more visceral
approach, but you can't get enough of someone singing 'lovertites',
whatever the flavour :-)

ASCOLTARE
calico jane mp3
::: from the newly released album 'visceral
vendor' on tripel records, this is a great piece - electronica
in flavour, although achieving a broader spectrum through
piano, feedback washes and organic samples. if you're looking
for some relief from formulaic IDM, this is a good destination.
ascoltare, aka dave henderson, was formerly
with a post-rock band called gwei-lo - more
info on the bella
union site. ascoltare has also just released a
series of mixes of kool keith's 'drugs' on dubbel (tripel's
subsiduary), making use of the CD-R format for smaller run
quantities. more
ascolatre mp3s on tripel's site.
