CARRIE [MEXICO]

carrie
solo artist carrie (laura becerra) is signed to tijuana’s static discos – and she’s in good company, sharing a table with both fax and murcof, two of mexico’s most impressive electronic artists. they both lend a hand for carrie’s album ‘honey blue star’; fax (ruben tamayo) on production duties, with the final master by fernando corona (murcof). having been a member of many mexican bands, such as mery poppins, bar√≥n ashler and miyagi, ‘honey blue star’ is her debut solo project – a split release with spain’s dearstereofan label.
the press blurb helpfully references morr music (esp. lali puna), tujiko noriko and hope sandoval as points along the compass, however i can’t help but feel that carrie takes a more celebratory approach than such artists, and – unlike noriko – the production never gets in the way of the simple melodies. that said, there’s not one track on ‘honey blue star’ that opts for a traditional folk route, despite the central instrumentation of voice and acoustic guitar. every track takes a different production approach, whether it’s a heavily effect-laden vocal (‘aloha marii’), a splash of tiny gltiches (‘complicado’) or stumbling, drunk dub beats (‘eco’), there’s a twist at every turn – which makes the album all the more thrilling to consume in one sitting. and despite the obvious references to another singer-songwriter, the first of the two mp3s below does indeed appear to be about felines.
mp3: CARRIE ‘cat power’
mp3: CARRIE ‘i sabotage’ (non-album track)
