THE MAE SHI [US: CALIFORNIA]
revelation 3 mp3
funny this one – i played a track from the ‘terrorbird’ album on the last show without realising that an email from the mae shi‘s brad was sitting waiting for me in the in-box. happy co-incidences abound. the album is 30 tracks in total, nothing over two and a half minutes and most tracks substantially under that length. it’s incredibly diverse too, with sounds ranging from merzbow-like screams of guitar to fat electro pop. definitely worth investigating further, check out the web site here.
DJ SO SU MI [CANADA]
steve albeenie can lick my weenie mp3
and another example of visiting a site and getting a simultaneous email through via co-incidental transcendental mailways. hello to suhrid manchanda aka dj so su mi from montreal. su was guitarist a band called da bloody gashes (feat members of les georges leningrad – check them out too for wonderful weirdness) and is now making some seriously fucked up glitch electro breaks with a great lo-fi edge. cheers too for su for directing me (via his blog) to a couple of mp3 blogs that i had previously missed out on, namely robot is smashed by punctuality and an idiot’s guide to dreaming. go see!
LACKLUSTER [FINLAND]
line noise – venutian travels (mix 2) mp3
great to hear from lackluster following on from last month’s post. the above mp3 is the 2nd mix for florida-based line noise. you can now listen to streams and buy lackluster‘s ‘showcase’ album (on the merck label) through warp’s bleep site.
DISHTONE [CROATIA]
grand piano mp3
well, it’s all happening in croatia it seems 🙂 following on from the amazing no name no fame, comes dishtone – and thanks to ante frankic from the ‘el seguendo’ show on radio kl in split, croatia for getting in touch and passing on the link. of course, it’s near on impossible to know much about the artist(s) involved as i don’t speak the language, so we are left solely with our ears to provide some guidance throughout this strangely connected yet strangely impenetrable world of international music… this mp3 sounds like a mix between both digital and analog although i suspect it’s all in the programming. the live drum sounds + glockenspiel in this slice of electronica lend a slight jazz feel to proceedings as it chugs along. a true head-nodder! THE FEENOM CIRCLE [US: SAN FRANCISCO]
the pawn shop mp3
cheers to roger from feenom circle for dropping me a line – check out the above track, some midtempo hip hop with sweet production, pulling influences from anticon for sure. other mp3s, available from their site, are a little more straight up, but pretty solid if you like it old school.
VON INA [US: SAN FRANCISCO]
same sad song mp3
the sf examiner calls them ‘dance-rock foxes’ and i guess there’s a crushing inevitably about media getting hot under the collar whenever a four-piece girl band get loud and nasty. check out their press page and see how many superlatives relating to feral animals you can find, it’s very frigging odd. anyway, von ina have rightly been dropped into the same post-punk bracket as !!! and their ilk, however the above track betrays a more rockin’ heart which makes the whole project that little bit more kick-ass. like a fox. or a ferret. or maybe a stoat?
CRIX CRAX CRUX [US: FLORIDA]
to the birds of the limb mp3
yeah, i’m a fan of this one. thanks to brian from frigital records in jacksonville, florida for dropping me a line with a few links – including this genre-bending track from crix crax crux. good to hear that in this day of the dull 70s rock revival that there’s still a place for skewed guitar-based alt.pop. still, the email did say that frigital promotes “taut post-punk, woozy folk, and damaged pop from the bedroom, basement and beyond” – so you’ve got a rough idea of what we’re looking at here… more info and mp3s from other artists on the frigital site.
demon lover emailed to say that s/he had found some links relating to solina – whom you might recall i featured at the beginning of july. both pieces here and here are written in catallan (doh!), but it might be useful for students of the language who simultaenously want to get into the music scene… and there are how many out there?
also, big up to jon from blentwell – if bandwidth means nothing to you, then check out his site for loads of links to mix sets from folks such as dj shadow, akufen and heaps more.
also, another shout out to better propaganda – this mp3 site just goes from strength to strength, check out some recent free downloads to top flight artists such as rjd2, milosh and the totally essential boards of canada mix of boom bip‘s ‘last walk around mirror lake’ (one of my favourite tunes of 2004).
