some long overdue props for the south african label african dope, home to a huge stack of beats, breaks and oddities. if ever there was a label that proved the point about non-traditional african music, this is it. born in cape town in 2000, african dope is the brainchild of local producer team krushed & sorted, whose ‘acid made me do it’ became the label’s debut release. their roster now includes the kalahari surfers (releasing the first new material since his 80s work – three of his albums being previously banned by the apartheid government), the constructus corporation (whose lavish 2003 hardcover book / cd concept album nearly bankrupt the label) and pretoria’s markus wormstorm, who also forms half of real estate agents with another dope artist sibot.
