The night took it cue from New Weird Australia’s compilation of the same name, released in 2010, and featured some of the finest eclectic and experimental music being made in the oft-maligned capital.
Headlining the night in their debut Sydney appearance were Savages – evolving out of the renowned Canberra act Spartak, and featuring a fine pedigree of artists – including Hellosquare label boss Shoeb Ahmad (guitars and vocals); his fellow Spartak bandmate, Evan Dorrian (nord, vocals, percussion), along with Matt Lustri (bass) and John Wilton (drums).
Canberra four-piece Kasha were one of the stand-out artists from the The Sound Of Young Canberra compilation, reworking the traditional notion of rock music, fusing tension, repetition and experimentation into their sound. Their debut 7″ single was released on Hellosquare, recorded and mixed by Casey Rice (Dirty Three, Pikelet).
Influenced by the likes of Fennesz and Xiu Xiu, show opener Rueben Ingall processes vocals and guitar through purpose-built patches to create a beautifully idiosyncratic melee of sound.
Savages’ Shoeb Ahmad also pitched up the turntables to DJ for the night, and there were visuals from local crew Eightfilters.
