at the ripe old age of 26, dj sandrinho has already spent ten years dj-ing rio funk balls. starting his career as one of dj marlboro‘s collective, sandrinho has developed his ambitions with the aid of his regular partner in crime, mc catra. over the years, sandrinho has laid the foundations for many classic baile funk tracks. and, unlike many producers whose sounds have crossed continents on the back of anonymous mp3s, sandrinho’s name is etching itself into the funk carioca backstory.
outside of brasil, sandrinho is also racking up some points – mixing ‘popozuda rock n roll’ for fellow countryman edu-k, ‘bucky done gun’ for m.i.a. and, at the tail end of last year, dropping a latin-funk remix of ‘mi confession’ for gotan project (if you’re checking that release, make room for edu-k’s popping ‘drop the bass’ remix).
man recordings have been responsible for bringing us edu-k recent singles and all the glorious attendant remixes, as well as marlboro’s arabic electro track, ‘habibi’. they’ve also given us one of the hottest cuts from the tail end of 2006, stereotyp‘s ‘jece valadao / uepa’ 12″, as part of a 5-disc series entitled ‘ funk mundial’ – collabs between brasilian funk producers and like minds from around the world. the next mundial pits fat planet regular, frenchman frederic galliano with brasilian mc xana – with ‘men of the moment’, sinden and herve on the flip.
this month, they release another new series of vinyl 12s, entitled ‘ baile funk masters’ – and it’s unsurprising that sandrinho’s name is writ large. described as “raw, uncut baile funk, straight outta the studios of rio”, sandrinho’s entry into the series hits us with seven tracks of 100% quality. kicking off the set is ‘italiano lento’ – a reworking of some familiar funk sounds, that builds from a standing start and winds the tempo into a guaranteed floor-filler. this kicked off my set at the sydney funk ball on sunday – and, as shit luck would have it, the power blew at the same time. that said, a blackout is a great excuse for a rewind, which is exactly what this deserves.
dj sandrinho’s ‘baile funk masters #1’ is released on february 27 via man recordings. sany pitbull and dj edgar follow with volumes 2 and 3 later in the year.
