SYDNEY FUNK BALL – SUNDAY 4 FEBRUARY

this sunday, uber lingua presents the inaugural ‘sydney funk ball‘ – bringing a little slice of rio baile funk to the city of sin.
it’s well known that rio de janeiro is home to some of the most dangerous slums in the world. with limited food, crime-ridden streets, guns and severe drug trafficking, children are given little hope for a normal life in the favelas. remarkably, this insane environment has also given rise to the world’s most in-demand musical genre; the sound of funk carioca, or baile funk (portuguese for “funk ball”).
this event, like the recent funk balls in melbourne, will raise money to help the efforts of sister carmelia, a woman who lives in one of the worst slums in the taquara district in rio and dedicates her life to ensuring that local children are fed, cleaned and receive medical attention.
this sunday at the abercrombie hotel (cnr abercrombie & broadway, central sydney) from 6pm, a paltry six bucks will buy you jimmy sing & sleater brockman (ro sham bo / fbi), brasilian djs marcelinho (one night in brazil) and melbourne’s guido melo plus uber residents bp, mashy p, sheerien and myself. there’s also a special capoeira performance by filhos da bahia and a fashion show from totem praia (that abercrombie dancefloor makes for the perfect catwalk…). also the legendary uber lingua barbeque and door prizes.
more info, including pics of sister carmelia’s work, can be found at uberlingua.com. see you there.
