dj-ing weekly at uber lingua has re-iterated one significant point to me – baile funk represents some of the most popular party-friendly music of our time. in the main, this is obviously due to the irresistible rhythm and tempo and the infectious demands of the mcs, however the familiarity of many of the sample sources is also a major contributing factor. from the ubiquitous rocky theme, to classic 80s tunes such as ‘sweet dreams’, ‘when doves cry’ and (oddly) front 242’s ‘headhunter’, to more leftfield choices such as bonde do role’s use of alice in chains or, more daringly, ‘summer nights’ from grease.
bonde james bonde wisely stick to this blueprint, using a cheeky selection of source material in their output, from britney’s ‘toxic’, t-rex’s ‘children of the revolution’ (in ‘t-rock’) to the dirty combination of ‘headhunter’ (once again) with alter ego’s ‘rocker’ in the excellent ‘pancadao rocker’.
this particular bonde consists of brazilians alcides barbosa and luciano cordoni, and uk dj, andy cummings – who compiled the exceptional ‘nao wave: brazil post punk‘ compilation for man recordings last year (highly recommended) and is a contributor to both earplug and stylus. the inspiration for all of these tracks is the dancefloor – and one dancefloor in particular, that of the club in campinas, sao paulo that bonde james bonde call home.
