sometimes you arrive at the party so late that you might as well just turn on your heels and go straight home. that’s how i feel about the blow – u.s. duo jona bechtolt and khaela maricich. i caught up last week, which shows you just how off the money i can be at times. i caught up the day after they had played sydney and the week after fbi had been flogging ‘paper television’ as their album of the week. if, like me, you’ve slept on the blow, now is the time to pick up the record, just so you can squeeze it into your 2006 end-of-year lists. and this weekend, i’ll be paying my penance – catching up on their entire back catalogue over at emusic.
given the critical praise heaped on the blow, they could have hand-picked any artist to remix their work. so kudos to them for squaring their sights on relatively unknown danish duo, jab mica och el – an anagram of their first names, jacob and michael. their debut release is also anagramtic, titled ‘abc hej i’m cola’. i wonder if there’s any other good anagrams in there? (answers on a drospact). the duo blend a delightful and seemingly effortless configuration of electronica laden with brass, strings and percussion – not dissimilar to what we might expect from jaga jazzist and smalltown supersound, but considerably more playful. the album is available through ache records. by way of balance to my woeful timing on the blow, i’m relieved to point out that jab mica och el originally featured on fat planet back in 2004…
jona from the blow also has a side project entitled yacht – i’ve posted an original track and a mixtape, which amongst many gems features the jab mica och el remix of ‘babay’.
