thursday 28th sept is the kick off for the five day annual sound summit sessions in newcastle, nsw. it’s designed to bring together independent artists, labels and anyone “working and playing” in electronica and hip-hop, this year exploring the question: “can we be intellectual about the music we dance to?”
the line-up for 2006 is hugely impressive with high-profile international guests rounding out an excellent local contignent. there’s dj gorky (from bonde do role), ghislain poirier, filistine, skist, nick catchdubs, chris lemon-red, ariel pink, triosk, my disco, macromantics, mountains in the sky, wire mc, choas math, ro sham bo djs plus local artists, producers, labels, promoters, managers, writers, broadcasters and more.
i’ll be on a couple of panels: “exploitation! music vs the internet” – immediately following a session on the opportunities the web offers, this covers the obstacles, legalities and challenges that we face when exploiting the power of the internet (friday 3pm); and “music blogging- beyond the personal and into the professional” (sat 12.30pm) examining the growth and relevance of blog culture – with daniel from boudist, evet jean (opulent) and chris (lemon-red).
all sessions are free, shows $15. more info at soundsummit.com.au
many of the artists will be doing additional shows along the east coast. filastine is pencilled for a show in sydney on 8th october, and – hopefully – as a guest on the fat planet show that afternoon. more info as it’s confirmed.
