good to be back in south africa, an area too seldom visited when digging for audio gold. truth is, there’s a great deal there – it’s just not at the rockface. that said, the new album from cape town’s considerate builders scheme dropped into my lap last week – no mess, no fuss and no manual labour required. ‘exit to riverside’ is the boychild of justin de nobrega, formerly an exponent of experimental electronica under the alias seven ark. by paying his dues in the IDM community, it’s no surprise that this hip hop project comes complete with a swathe of abstractions, glitches and cut-ups; referencing dabrye, blockhead and prefuse 73 in large amounts. however the experimentation never takes over – there’s plenty of blunted beats and deep electro to render it fully accessible. uniquely, it rarely waivers – solid and consistent from start to finish.
when digging for more on considerate builders scheme, you’ll find unit.r – an electro-rock quartet that counts de nobrega amongst their number. their sound could have easily blown in from berlin or nyc – even australia for that matter, fans of cut copy will certainly find a kindred spirit here. whilst it won’t win points for originality, it’s always good to know that the euro-american axis doesn’t have the monopoly on electro.
