MARIT BERGMAN [SWEDEN]

my shameful love for camp eighties electro-pop and for german techno collided yesterday upon discovering ‘rentcode’ – in which swedish artist marit bergman takes the vocal melody from the pet shop boys‘ ‘rent’ and drops it over justus kohncke‘s fast-becoming-legendary ‘timecode’. marit’s is currently ensconced inside her third solo album, with names such as scott walker, phil spector and mamma cass bearing down as influences.

maybe this is the next wave of bastard pop mash-thievery? forget mixing two tracks together, this is all about the live vocal. we’ve already had sugababes doing a re-vocal a couple of years back – anita howard‘s vocal over tubeway army (albeit originally conceived on a earlier mash by richard x) and, on his dj kicks entry, there’s erlend oye warbling the smiths‘ ‘there is a light that never goes out’ over a dub version of royksopp‘s ‘poor leno’. it takes karaoke to a whole new level – here’s the instrumental, prefer to sing a different song? time for a few beers and a visit to the karoke bar – genius awaits!
